Who will buy my Original Oldric Royce dress?

I have an original dress from designer Oldric Royce. It's beautifully made and in very good condition. I would appreciate any advise regarding what price and where to sell. I think the fabric is a thick grey satin with black satin piping design and I can only guess black taffetta like material. There is some discoloration under the arms. That professional cleaning would probably eliminate, but I am SCARED, VERY SCARED. It could very well be the DNA of Marjorie Merriweather Post for all I know! Thank you for any input you might offer.

Isn't that a beauty!

Are you currently selling anything anywhere, such as on eBay?

You probably know that prices can range greatly on eBay, but if you set a reserve, take good pictures including close ups, and also offer all details (size, any flaws)...you could have a reserve price and reach it. Maybe someone more knowledgeable about the designer (I had to look him up just now) would have more experience with the value.

Good luck!

I am currently not selling on eBay. I will probably take the leap very soon. I am being very cautious and trying to educate myself in Vintage Clothing quickly. I fell into this interesting and beautiful subject by accident. I have always liked pretty things but vintage clothes was not one of them, until now. I have come across a couple of dresses so far that really stand out and this Oldric Royce is one of them. I also have found a Sophie Wachner Original. Thanks so much for your advise. I hope to get some more. I really need to get as much as I can and I am not convince eBay is the way for these special pieces. Thanks, again.

yes--the piped design on this is just stunning, so pictures of it closeup will really get your buyers excited.

Like Maggie, I'd never heard of this designer before, but learned through googling that he was heiress/socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post's favorite dressmaker--that's a pretty elite stamp of approval! How did you learn of him?

Just like you googling. The quality, the one-of-a kind look of the dress just stood out too much to ignore. If this dress was yours, how would you attempt to sell it? Auction house? Thanks so much for replying and your vote of confidence. I am new to vintage clothes, this fantastic forum and I already feel very welcomed.

I honestly wouldn't be the best one here to advise you on whether to go with an auction house or ebay--I don't really have much experience selling really high-end vintage designer stuff, and have no idea what kind of prices this particular label might attract. I know several VFG members do sell pretty haute vintage with great success, and hopefully they will drop in and offer their advice.

Another option, if you're worried about visibility since you're not a regular ebayer or vintage clothing dealer, would be to consign with someone who has a well established website with high end stuff.

As far as the auction house idea--where are you located? I remember a thread last year when a UK VFGer had a museum worthy antique piece (a Worth, I think), and she took it to Kerry Taylor, who specializes in vintage textiles and vintage/designer fashion in/near London and does auctions devoted to them. (I mention her as a possible source of consultation about the dress/designer, because I sure as heck don't know anyone in the Eastern US to recommend!)

Thanks so much for your advise. I am located in Orange County, California. I am in great need of finding someone to be fair in regards to value. If you know of such a person that you can refer, I would appreciate it. It would be a blessing if you were local but I take it your in the Eastern U.S. Have you or do you know of a good online consignment place? I am totally unfamiliar on how this works. If you have the name of such places I would be happy to talk to them. Thanks again for your advise.

Julie (sorry if that's not your name!)--I don't have a specific name, sorry! (The "big" auction house around here is Skinner, and they're not what I'd call vintage clothing experts!)

But you can certainly post a thread (or edit the title to this thread) letting VFGers know you are looking for a consignor/advice on value for your dress--there are members here who may be able to help you themselves if not guide you to resources on the West Coast.

Hi Julie,

I am in Southern California and like the others, high end garments rarely come my way and like you, I usually haven't a clue about pricing and such.

What I can tell you is that you will most likely find your source on Melrose, or in close proximity in Los Angeles. There are a few in Venice also, but I'm not sure of the names. Maybe a search will help you.

Because we live in close quarters with the Hollywood set, your best bet may be to contact a few of these shops and see if consignment is an option.

My favorite place is called "Aaardvark's" in Pasadena. They have wonderful vintage garments. I used to take my stepdaughter there for her Halloween costumes and I've bought a few pieces there. Not sure if they consign, but it can't hurt to call and find out. Maybe the call will lead elsewhere. Here is their address below:

1253 E Colorado Blvd
Pasadena, CA 91106-1834
Phone: (626) 583-9109

Again, I cannot vouch for these two stores, I've just heard their names mentioned around the vintage clothing stores locally, but maybe if you call them you can see if they do consignments. I have found that most of the other vintage stores are just fluff for the Hollywood types that are not as interested in the designers, as they are the trends of the day.

Hope this helps you and good luck!

Aardvark's does not consign nor do most of the shops on Melrose (if any) many do BUY clothing, but they won't pay much. I would not make that drive (driving into LA is kind of a pain) if you think you are going to get top dollar.

I also feel that most consignment shops around here (I am also in OC) cater to older women. All of the vintage shops I know won't consign either, "it is too much of a pain" I was told.

I think ebay may be your best bet, it is a beauty. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the advice. The thought of going to L.A. doesn't excite me either (O.C. gal myself). I am still absorbing all the good input from all of you and thanks so much for your time. I've heard about and viewed some not so impressive final prices of beautiful, vintage clothing on Ebay. Are any of you doing well with your high end vintage clothing websites in comparison? Thanks again for your help.
