Whoa - $30,000 + for a fake fur coat !

The story is --HERE--. All it takes is two bidders - in this case two men, neither of whom were at the auction but called in bids. I wonder if they knew about all the moth holes.

Thrown in with it in the same lot were two 1950s blazers and a red and white striped 1920s men's bathing suit.

They were worth more than the "centerpiece" of the lot!

Kerry Taylor says the bidders had never seen the coat except in photos; the moth holes are SO conspicuous in the photos... Even if sheer competitiveness drove the bidders, you'd think they'd pick something worthier of their tenacity?

I stay away from her auctions. I feel she is over priced. At one point I thought of putting into auction the Paulette Marchaud turban - the pink hat - so I emailed them. A Paulette turban from this time never comes on the market. I was emailed back "It didn't meet their standard of quality". Do you believe that? Well they are good enough for the V&A Museum and the MET! I have actually come to realize this hat does belong in a museum!

IF, by the picture, the coat is buttoned wrong for a man, the moth holes would be hidden by buttoning it properly.... that said, it is alot for a faux-fur...

It's a beautiful coat - and once it's restored you won't notice the moth holes. Mohair is particularly good at hiding flaws.

Sheri, don't blame Kerry Taylor if her auctions are successful: the buyers set the price. I'm not familiar enough with the Paulette Marchaud brand but most auctioneers specialise in an area: perhaps another auctioneer would be more knowledgeable in this area? You could also contact the museums directly if you know they collect her designs.

What a piece of crap coat. Moth holes, sweat stained collar..really??? If I got this in a house buy, it would straight in the bin. Sorry, but when I sell beautiful, wearable 1950's dresses for £4.99 on ebay with 1 bidder (and often a non paying bidder) and then see garbage like this go for $30 000, it makes me despair of this business.

Is this what vintage has come to?

Yikes. Mixed feelings on this whole thing. I had a wonderful teddy bear mohair coat from the late teens early 1920s and it sat in my shop for 2 years without a looker. Perfect shape and a good size too. Oh well! We all have similar stories I guess after so many years. Lei, I cannot help but feel the same way, except I think it is a beautiful coat and at least worth having for collecting or costume use. But anything over $200 is ridiculous!

Sherri, nice to have you at the forums. May I ask, what year is your Paulette and what does the label look like? I know Kerry does not usually handle many hats unless of some special date or exception, and hats are not their best selling items, but for the consultant to dis the quality of her work seems odd to me. I would not feel insulted, hats are not easy to consign to the big auction houses and they usually wind up selling them in lots unless something super special or rare.

May we see the label on your hat, or can you let us know when it is from?

Thank you so much!

Maybe it has some hidden treasure sewn into the lining that only those two men know about. That would explain the high price and the ferocious bidding! :D
