Did anyone watch the parade of athletics at the opening ceremony of the olympics? Ralph Lauren designed the outfits for the USA team. I was very disappointed in them. Just navy blue puffy waist coats? I did love the Canadian's red coats and scarves.

Did you see Azerbaijan's pants...wild! and the Bermuda shorts were a hoot too!

I really enjoyed K.D. Lang sing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

The set design was quite spectacular, quite the use of lighting technology, pity about the glitch at the very end for the lighting of the torch!

So sad about the death of the athlete from Georgia, Nodar Kumaritashvili at his practice luge run.

I was very disappointed in the singing of our national anthem. Don't mess with the original, people! How are you supposed to sing along?? Have no idea who that girl singing it was either?

Loved KD!!! What a voice that girl has! The orcas in the floor spouting and swimming was a very cool effect too!

I skipped the first hour but saw the last 20 or so countries march in (I liked the US team knitted toque but the rest of the outfit was a bit unflattering). I thought the artistic portion of the evening was spectacular - the presentation with the lighting effects of the northern lights, totem poles, the giant bear puppet, the dancers and fiddlers, etc. I loved it! Then it got boring and embarrassing towards the end. What the hell was that fat guy doing his Canadians are so great speech for? That is so un-Canadian. Then the endless speeches including untranslated French speeches, the boring Olympic hymm with too many stanzas and the opera singer who couldn't lip-sync very well, the technical glitch with the over-designed Olympic torch and the ramp that Rick Hansen could barely get up in his wheel-chair and the anti-climax of the truck taking Wayne Gretzky to the other over-designed Olympic torch at the waterfront - ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

*Proud to be Canadian*

I thought the show was (for the most part) excellent. The less said about the singing of the National anthem the better. I also thought the whales were awesome, loved KD Lang and also the poet (and I'm not a huge fan of poetry - especially for something like that).

I liked the Canadian Team outfits, and agree that the US team was a bit of a letdown considering RL did the design. Dean and Dan
Caten (D-Squared) designed the performers outfits - liked
Sarah McLachlan's gown, and the red dress the young gal that had the misfortune to sing O'Canada wore. Wasn't that crazy about
Nelly Furtado's dress. I liked Measha Brueggergosman's gown
(sang the Olympic Hymn). Don't know who did the costumes for
the fiddlers and dancers segments but loved them.

And yes, the accident on the luge run with the fatality of Nodar Kumaritashvili of Georgia was so tragic. My heart broke when his team mates entered the stadium.

That was long.... (The "show" not the thread.) I taped it and despite fast-forwarding through some, I am only half-way to the end. I loved the whales too. I liked the fiddlers' portion - did you notice the loose strings all over the place? It was also a cool effect where that fellow was running in one place.... and the bear coming out of the floor.

But gosh - it's all about sports ultimately. Thats' what I really want to see. I love the ice skating and skiing. You familiar with ski cross? I can't imagine it - and I bet there will be injuries. I may have mentioned my best friend here who was on the olympic cross country team (she even carried the flag in Innsbruck.) She said ski cross is the roller derby of skiing.

She doesn't have a TV, so I am taping events for her. She still cross country skies, but she is a goat former and she goes skiing with her four billy goats. I keep meaning to get up there to take a photo.

she takes her goats skiing? that is so cool!

I didnt watch it. But I will tune in when Apolo Ohno ::swoon:: skates.

And I am already sick of hearing about those red mittens. I don't get it. They are red mittens. They don't even have any rhinestones or glitter on them.

The girl who lip-synched the national anthem, is a Montreal girl - 16 years old, Nicky Yanofsky. We caught her at her first time Montreal Jazz Festival performance back in 2006, she's known as the youngest jazz singer to have performed at the festival.

She's about to have her first studio album released produced by Phil Ramone this spring and will be embarking on an international tour.

I felt her dress was age inappropriate, too old looking for a 16 year old. I didn't like Nelly's dress either and she could barely walk in those shoes!

The tap sequence sure had a fabulous energy to it!

I loved the opera singer's dress, but did not really enjoy the operatic olympic hymn, it was funny watching the faces of the people as they listened to her.

Loved the opening sequence with the snowboarder, the fiddlers and
step dancers, and kd lang (she was great at the Calgary games too).

Special effects, whales, etc. were great.

Was glad to see the death of the luge athlete was acknowledged, and
I thought it was handled well. My heart went out to the team marching in.

The party who carried in the olympic flag were nice choices, and of course
the Mounties in their red serge with the Canadian Flag.

National anthem.... the young lady was lovely.... I'll sit on my hands so
I don't say what I really want to say about it.

Liked the Canadian uniforms, and I seem to be one of the few people who
really liked the USA uniforms of the turtleneck aran sweaters, slim pants,
short jacket, and the alpine boots along with the toque.
I thought overall it had a bit of a vintage look?

Everyone seemed to enjoy the ceremony for the most part,
so I guess that's the main thing! :drinkingtoast:

I admit I recorded it too and I fast-forwarded through a lot of it as well... I got it on TF1, the French channel. They had Roch Voisine as a co-commentator, which I though was a nice touch.
I'm a huge Bryan Adams fan, but I thought that song he sang with Nelly was... well... unspectacular. Could've been better. Nelly's dress was a bit too tight.
Loved that tap and fiddle part, that was really great.
But... what nobody has mentioned, the best thing of all, for me, was the "surprise" almost at the end - Garou! He's got such a great voice and presence! I've been a fan of him ever since I saw him on the first time on French TV years ago, when he was in"Notre Dame de Paris". Yup, definitely like him even better than Roch Voisine... :saint: .

I may be out of step, and I know that the 80s inspired looks are back, but the 80s/90s inspired shoulder pouf just didn't do anything for me. I think it made it a bit "dated" in a way. As far as the tightness, I don't think it was restrictively tight - I think it must have just had some lycra or something in it, and she's just slim and in good shape. In some photos, it looks like its two piece rather than a seam being across her stomach suggesting tightness. The only photo of it I can find is the AP photo. If you mouse over it, you'll see it bigger:
