Wire in hips - 1950s dress

Hi all,

Just been looking at my gran's wedding dress for the first time in years. She made it herself, and it's got some odd wiring around the hips. Four pieces of wire hold out the fabric at right angles from the body on the hips and bum.

There's only one photo of her wearing it, and you can't really see what effect the wire has. Can anyone link me to an image of a similar dress being worn?

I'd love to wear it, but thinking I might take the wire out and flatten the seams first!
