A Tribute to Vintage Department Stores

Members of the VFG are always glad to see a department store label in a vintage clothing item—we all remember our trips to the unique and wonderful stores that once dotted our regions, from Harrod’s to Bullock’s, Garfinkel’s, Sakowitz and Eaton’s. This week—through the vintage clothing and accessories proudly bearing their labels—we revisit some of those stores, many no longer in existence, and others still holding strong.

From departmentstoremuseum.blogspot.com:"Marshall Field & Company was the Grande Dame of Grande Dame American department Stores. Macy’s may have had the larger building, Neiman Marcus had more exclusivity, but Field’s was the standard-bearer for the industry on account of its reputation for quality, its status as a civic institution, and because of its beautiful, iconic store building in Chicago."

Much loved former Chicago department store Marshall Field and Company had various sections on each floor of its State Street location. Each section had its own label, rather like smaller boutique stores within the larger store. For example, Field’s “Sunningdale Shop” specialized in “magnificent casual clothes”, while the exclusive “28 Shop” focused on elegant designer clothing and "The Debutante Room" offered items for stylish, younger ladies.
