How old do you think this sequin belt is?

It has a small label saying Made in France, similar to those you find in bags.
It has bugle beads around the edge, and fastens with three poppers.
The backing is something like canvas.

It seems 'older' somehow, but not sure when?

Not sure when it was made, sorry. But it does look very much like some of the old millinery appliques that i have in my collection. The backing is some sort of buckram. I get a general sense of 1950s but I do not know why. Could it perhpas be a costume piece? It looks it to me.

You are not alone in getting a 1950s vibe from it.

A costume piece is possible - certainly somehow I would think it had a place in a more complete outfit. I could see it as part of a show girl or circus costume.
