    Hi Everyone,
Wondering if this is 40s or 50s maybe?
    Thanks for any help.

It's lovely. I'm thinking it's a 40s gimp crochet with celluloid handle, but wait for the purse experts to weigh in.

I have one that is similar with wooden handles that was my mothers. Interesting to think it might be 40s. I'll look for it.

late 30 - early 40s. These were sold as a kit then, very popular.

1930s - I agree with Laura that the handle is celluloid. I have two very similar pieces in my collecton.

I didn't realize they were kits - that explains why we find them fairly often.

Thanks everyone. I have seen these listed as 'popcorn crochet' . Is that a 'technical' term and are there others (along with gimp crochet?)?

I have seen it referred to as "Popcorn Crochet." I think that is a correct term.

My grandmother and her best friend LuLu saved up their money to buy them at the Five and Dime and made them on long train trips.

The gimp simply refers to the cording, while the stitch is 'popcorn' as you've noted.

I have two of these - both navy:

The pattern/design of the crocheted gimp is a little different on each of them but it's hard to see in the photos.

Yes as Laura says popcorn is the name of that particular crochet stitch.

Oh yes Linn - the scotty dog handle is wonderful.

  17. I have a few also. Unfortunately, most that I run across now, the handle has disinterested from time since it was celluloid.
