I have acquired a maxi dress with this label, but I am having difficulty in dating it. Paisley print makes me think 60s 70s, but the pinking sheared seams make me wonder if it's earlier? Have uploaded some photos, hoping someone can help. Many thanks .
Nu-mode was founded in 1950 by Fred Singer (the youngest of 13 children from a Polish-Jewish family who had immigrated to Toronto in c. 1900), and his cousin Henry Zagdanski, a Holocaust survivor who came to Toronto in 1946. They ran the company as a small operation until they were bought out by Dylex Diversified in 1967. They continued to manage the company, which grew into a large manufacturer, until 1997 when the two original owners sold out to a former employee, Saul Greenberg. The company had troubles surviving WTO competition from countries with cheap labour, and finally closed in 2019.
I'd go with 70s too on this one - love the paisley print! Great information, Jonathan! I had a really cute Nu-mode dress from the later 70s that I had bought at a secondhand shop in Toronto and wore for several years.
