I picked this up at an estate sale and am wondering if anyone here can name the style and appx date? There is only one label inside and no other info. Also, there is a strap that is attached that hangs in the back like a loop, cannot tell how that fits in when worn. Is it supposed to loop under a back bun or ponytail to secure the hat in place?
Yes, sure is cute! Its a stylized boater or sailor hat, with a ruffled brim. From the photos, its hard to tell if its made of a natural straw or some novelty straw braid material. This is a popular style with collectors.
Interesting! I will have to look up tilt hats to see how they were affixed and worn. The strap on the back seems like such an inelegant addition, detracting from the style but I guess I'll try it and see.
There are examples in our hat guide under tilt. https://vintagefashionguild.org/resources/hats/?_paged=2#resource_items-27. One of my favorite styles.
Ah, I see. The strap would generally go under the hair. Those examples definitely help to see how it would be worn. Thanks!
