Mid 1800’s dress dating and fiber identification

Interesting. The style looks earlier than 1830's to me, but hard to tell unless seen on a mannequin or dress form. I have never seen flocking on a dress this old, it seems quite odd to me. But then again who knows? Flocking was around, but I have not seen it used for clothing. Are we...

Antique French Fashion Doll Dress fabric help needed!

Does it have slightly greasy feel to it? Does it have any trace of odor? Oilcloth seems quite inappropriate for a doll dress, as does the upholstery trim used for edging the dress, Possibly this was made up of old fabric and they added the upholstery trim to it. It does not appear antique to...

    Vintage Stetson

I agree it looks to be from the 1980's or 1990's. From a price and value standpoint, it really doesn't make much difference if it is from the 1970''s 80's or 90's. Its generally the older Stetson hats (and other men's hats) that collectors look for and which have a higher value. Its a nice...

    Old dress

It is not all that unusual to find 1930's dresses with zippers. although the placement of the zipper on yours seem a bit odd (to me anyway). Is the collar original to the dress? It seems newer to me, but I do not have in hand as you do.

    1798 dress on Antiques Roadshow

Personally I think that estimation is insanely over the top. Not at all sure how she came up with that.

Is this bag an original from the 1920s?

Pretty, but yes, a reproduction. More like a hand made piece, put together from different items, some old, some newer.

    50s blouse? Vanity Original?

I agree, 1950's. The fabric appears to be organdy, unless it is silk then it would be organza. .

Is this hat original from the 1950s or was it created at a much later time and if so, what decade would that be? Could it possibly be an 80/90s hat?

It's an original 1950's hat. The outer covering material was referred by several names, its a panne' finished velvet sometimes called seal cloth by milliners. It was hugely popular for hats in the mid 1950's and came in lovely colors. Love the feathers!

Identification of Hat from movie Julia

I love the hats in that movie. Yes, it is referred to as a Cossack style hat. It is a toque, with a Cossack style and an angled brim and tilted crown. Made of lamb fur. And yes, it is very much correct to the period.

    Vintage Wedding Dress

It is a beautiful dress. Maggie you have found similar styles! From a historical dress standpoint, these were referred to as "bums" or bum rolls, or "rumps". Worn in the Medieval times and also the late 1700s. Women wore them under their clothing, and these are worn outside, so not sure if...

    Vintage rayon

I recall reading many many years ago, an article about rayon and why it is different. Aside from what has been stated, it put forth the so called fact that the "recipe" for making some of those old pre-war rayons was lost. No company wanted to try to figure out how to make again or build the...

    Joann went bankrupt!

Some of the really big cities still have fabric and garment districts, L.A., San Fran, New York, etc. They have amazing stuff. It's worth getting a group together for a day trip to go there as it is kind of overwhelming to go it alone. When I was young in N.J. there was a store called the...

    Joann went bankrupt!

I was sad to hear of this. Pretty much the last store left for home sewing, tools, and crafting supplies trims and fun stuff. Has home sewing fallen more to the wayside in the past decade? While I have not been in a fabric store for decades, it was nice knowing they were still there...

Early Saint Laurent Piece what is it?

Yes, interesting. I have come across early 1970's Laurent pieces that were lightweight wool coats or capes and were unlined. It does look more like a robe, but I suspect it may be a coat which possibly had a matching pair of trousers. Of course, I am speculating on that part.
