The close-ups of the buttons look like plastic to me - faux abalone. But - I agree with Nicole - they do not put me off. I still love the coat. As Nicole said - plastic will feel warm and shell - abalone or MOP will feel cool to the touch.
Maureen -
How wide are the legs at the hem on the pants? They don't look overly narrow to me which is why I thought the outfit was later - maybe mid-'60's to late.

The Pendleton Bermuda shorts look '50's to me and the label seems to match the label in our LR:

The Sacony outfit looks late '60's - early '70's. That's probably Carol Ann's nametag when she went to college!

I'm not sure about the era either but I think it's definitely older. The beads appear to be carved lapis or probably faux lapis. The clasp is called a push-in box clasp. The part attached to the ring behind the push-in tongue part is "unusual." I don't know very much about this type of...
I just found this article in the online NY Times about an exhibit that sounds wonderful. It's only open a few more days:
On Stage in Fashion - An exhibition at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts examines what happens when fashion meets costume...
Great idea for a shop! Love the charms. The airplane is a Lockheed P38 Lightning- one of the principal U.S. fighter planes in WWII. (Guess who told me that????) Hint - His father flew one.
The silver bracelet is great - I am not sure how to date it. Do you know anything about when the person who owned it got it or where? Obviously with the 1883 patent that bracelet is Victorian not Victorian Revival. I was thrown off by the "19"
Sorry about the misinformation on the buckles...
Jody - did a wonderful blog a couple of years ago about suits. Here are her blogs on '40's and '50's suits - I really feel the suit we are discussing is '40's- and stunning! Here are Jody's blogs:

I can see your photos thanks to Ookoo - and have no idea how to post them on this site, either, since I don't use flicker but I'm sure someone knows! There must be separate code to imageshare.
The French belt buckle - front and back - looks like "jet" in the photo but since you say it's...

That was great! Thank you for posting it. It's so interesting to see fashions that seem so much more recent than what we think of as typical of the late '30's. So many of the looks were examples of "timeless elegance!"
There were solid earthtones in the '80's from companies like Banana Republic who were known for khaki and the safari look. Here's an interesting history of the company:

I'm not sure about solid...
The pin is plated with a goldtone plating over a base metal. During WWII when base metal was needed for the war effort, a lot of jewelry was made of Sterling - some was plated and some was left natural. If it is Sterling is would be marked.
You can use either a toothbrush or a Q-tip. Some...
The "best" jewelry cleaner for this type of pin is Jewel Joose but sadly it's been discontinued. You might try a mild solution of something like Dawn detergent - cut with water. Put it in a spray bottle and spray the metal. Rinse it after a few minutes and dry it thorougly. Don't put it...
I LOVE everything! The '30's and early '40's are my favorite periods. I watched "The Thin Man" recently. It was released in 1934. Nora (Myrna Loy) wore a stunning bias cut black gown with a humongous dress clip at the V neckline. I can picture this unsigned Eisenberg...
