The print reminds me of "pick up sticks" and I agree with a '60s dating. I would call the neckline "staggered" but I have no idea if there's a particular name for it. I'd also call the buttons "decorative brooch style buttons with rhinestones" or something like that. The fabric looks like a poly...
These were made in Brazil, Jonathan - and I agree with an early '90s date. The '80s boots, as you said, had stilettoes. I'm still part goth and love lace up boots like these, and find the ankle support helps me work on my feet all day - plus they look nice with dresses.
Temptress. Hope it's okay but I've bought them - please send airmail and let me know if there's any additional cost. They're just what I like and in my size too, curse you Melanie.
Hi all,
My new book "Style is Eternal" is currently available for half price, direct through the publisher, so $22.50 instead of the usual $45. They can offer discounted shipping for overseas orders, plus if you're not in Australia you don't pay the GST (10% tax) so there's a further saving...
I like to think that I'm catching the zeitgeist :drinking2:
The quote is YSL's: "Fashion fades, style is eternal". I certainly won't complain if anyone thinks my book has inspired it but of course, it's the other way around.
Pity we'll miss it as it doesn't open until July - we're planning our...
Hi Len, and welcome to the forums.
These are generally from the '60s and hand beaded (rather than sequins), yours has lots of pearly beads, quite nice. We can't help with values here, as per forum rules (there are too many variables) but if you look at closed ebay auctions you should be able to...
Thanks Melanie - I was completely fooled by that squarish toe and fat '70s style font on the label. Happy to bow to your greater knowledge on this one.
Very well made dress - I see late '50s to early '60s, probably at the earlier end of that field but if you can tell us how long the skirt is and whether the hem is original it will help.
Joe, it's clear that your suit has been worn and perhaps updated (the mismatched buttons), or at least altered.
The deep hems to the trousers suggest that perhaps the cuffs were removed as fashions changed - this is very common.
It looks to be in excellent condition. I also note the elastic...
Hi Joe, and welcome to the forums - are you sure it's not a real pocket? It sounds like you've already checked the stitching and there are not holes for snipping through. Another way to check is if you feel along the front of the jacket, where the pocket would be. If you feel very thoroughly you...
I agree with MJ - the buttons, faux pocket flaps and most of all the bust seaming looks early '60s too. That combination of princess seam with short dart is very specific and you don't really see it at any other time.
Well done Gayle! It was great to see more of your work: it seems you specialise in some of the most difficult and detailed of all period costumes and your work looks beautiful. Congrats on your feature x
When you're hunting for vintage, you're inevitably going to find mostly modern things, so it's a matter of picking up the clues so you can recognise the pearl amongst the chaff. Apologies for the mixed metaphor.
I'd recommend my book "Love Vintage" too but it's out of print now, but you can...
You're welcome - and if you want to know about shoes, check out the books written by Jonathan Walford - excellent resources especially for dating shoes.
There's a lot to learn Hannah: I can recommend reading books on vintage because they're a good way to pick up a comprehensive knowledge, especially about the basics.
Here's a list of books written by VFG members - in particular you might like to check out Melody Fortier's book as it's a good...
Hannah, there a lot of misdated "vintage" items on etsy. I don't think they police it at all, and it's a great place for amateurs to sell so they may not realise that their datings are out.
That's one of the many reasons I love the VFG forums: any one can post their items here and get opinions...
Jess Ica if you can post clear, close ups of the printed label, zipper pull and any other details it will help us date it.
I'm still getting a fairly modern feel about this one but am not an Hermes expert.
I agree with Ruth in that authenticating is expressing an opinion about whether it is...
I agree with Melanie: I think the decision has more to do with current trends, so that a modern audience can identify with the characters. I haven't seen the film but I guarantee that if they really did dress everyone like it was the early '80s there would be some pretty laughable outfits. Film...
