Hi Linn -- That dress is definitely similar, but is two pieces, where mine is definitely one piece. Here's the link for Jody's blog entry: http://coutureallure.blogspot.com/2009/05/serbin-of-florida-vintage-dresses.html
The one and only time I was in Las Vegas, The Stardust Hotel was still...
Woman I bought it from said her mom "had it for a long time and it's at least from the 50s." But kids can be wrong. Saw that Jody has a blog entry about Serbin. Perhaps she can pinpoint the date? Feel free to take label for the LR. Found a folded hankie in the pocket when it came back from the...
Yes. True. There's only so much time and effort you can put into a single dress of minimal (monetary) value, even if it were 100% perfect. But it's always hard for me to give up. ; )
I love the pink one, Nicole. Both are nice quality. But you're right. The pink one is heavy silk. Saks has always been a nice store. No junk there, ever.
Hi Linn -- Back from HD and tried the Folex. Didn't work, and I think it's because these "stains" are not true stains. See how the dark splotches are only on the orange fabric? They "jump over" the white. Wouldn't a regular stain just land where it lands? It must be some sort change in the...
Hi Linn. Yes, I recognized the label right away from the LR when I first saw the dress! Thanks for the head's up on the proper name for the style.
Haven't seen Folex before, but will search for it now.
I would be so happy to get these stains out. I think the dress is just adorable.
Thanks, Linn.
Hi,
Could you give some tips on dating scarves. Sometimes it's blatantly obvious based on the era-specific pattern or style. But are there other clues?
How about these two -- the pink one from Saks Fifth Avenue, and the purplish blue from Schiaparelli? My guesses are 60s and 70s, respectively...
Hi - Look at this fabulous Sears Hawaiian Fashions dress. They're not making stuff like this at Sears anymore, that's for sure. It is so well-constructed! It even has a wonderful waist stay. But... there is serious staining on the lower part of the skirt. Can't get it out with regular washing...
Hi, Got this from an estate chock full of gorgeous baby and children's clothing -- mostly from the 30s, 40s and 50s. I don't normally buy kid's stuff, but I couldn't resist a few items, including this lovely bonnet. No labels.
I show it on a 9-year-old, a 7-year-old (tiny kid), and an adult...
Thanks, Carrie. I noticed the same, and found the Anton Pieck thing interesting, as it's another illustrator name I've learned from vintage clothing (the first being Art Nouveau favorite Aubrey Beardsley).
Meanwhile, I've seen a whole lot of these being advertised as 50s, and I was highly...
Hi, I've got one of those prototypical octagonal wooden decoupaged purses. I'd thought they were almost all from the 70s (not that I recall seeing them as a kid). But I'm looking for comps and seeing wildly varied dates. I'm guessing most of those dates are wrong. What say you experts? ; ) I...
OK, wow. That is a lot of interesting information, Linn!
The dress is just a dress. Nothing removable, no jacket. The "MERITA" zipper is on the side and is a bit of a bulky beast of a zip. No shoulder pads, yes snapped bra stays (which are not on the shoulder, but a bit forward, which may...
Hi,
I had to dig really deep to find ANY information on this label. I'm attaching my sole finding -- an Oct. 1948 article from The New York Times. What it tells me is that by 1948, Ms. Roth was well-enough established to be showing her wares at The Plaza. Her 400 Park Avenue shop address also...
I believe all three are mink. Not positive of course, but my mom's cousin was a furrier on the lower east side. I spent a lot of time playing with leftover pelts. ; )
It doesn't look like matelasse to me, because I can't see that threads are causing the puckering, which is part of the definition of matelasse (which is similar to trapunto, without the stuffing). Also, matelasse has to be double-layered (it's similar to quilting, in that respect).
Looks more...
I'd say the level of "acceptable flaws" really depends on the buyer's intentions. Is the item going to be put on display or added to a collection, or is it going to be worn? Some vintage-loving folks focus on designer labels or perfect examples of this or that era or style. But others just like...
Hi! I have one too. I suspect this was a brand that catered to plus-size ladies, but that is just a hunch. I've asked a few of my "plus-size vintage specialist friends" and they couldn't provide too much information, but concurred that they've only ever seen larger sizes with this label. How big...
Thanks, everyone. That dress is very special to me. I wrote an entire blog entry about it -- "The Pink Dress." It's on my site, which I can't post here, but you can easily find your way there if you have a minute to spare and any interest in reading it ; ). xox
Wanna see me in a REALLY nice dress? Check this one out. Hand-made in 1955 by my grandmother. Worn in photo #1 by my mother to her eldest brother's wedding, and then played with by me for the next 45 years and counting... The rhinestone straps were gone (I have them somewhere) by the time photo...
