Hello friends,
Any advice for me on dating this rayon peignoir with satin ribbon straps and trim? I love the tiny shoulder pads.
Will post a few photos (have lots more... just ask).
Would love to learn the answers to these questions! I'm curious about the term "man-made." Seems modern, but then, I'm on shoe expert.
There seem to be two English "Equity" shoe companies. One in Leicestershire, which closed in 2008 (after 100+ years), and this one:
Pavers Ltd:

Like I said... just one potential indicator, not a foolproof or sole method.
So far I've been on target with the ones I've had here (helpfully, many have been labeled, so offered "evidence" for study), but I tend not to ever be 100% confident without a label.
SO... when I have doubts...
Well ladies, if it IS rayon, it's the very best I've ever felt. I would almost bet that it's silk. But again, does it really matter? Beautiful is beautiful... And I just LOVE this dress.
Thanks again!
I agree. It's really beautiful. And exactly my size so I'd better get it listed pronto ; )...
I know what you mean by the two smells. And silk also tends to do that "curling up thing" when you burn it. Still... I am never 100% certain. Truth be told, burn tests make me nauseated for hours...
No labels at all. And now I think I have additional evidence that you are, in fact, spot on. I found this dress with the single most incredible dress ever -- a sequined Peggy Roth number that was damaged by the dry cleaner (insert bad word here!). A look through the NYTimes archives found me an...
Oh, I love this dress. Such a whimsical pattern. And it feels so great. The way the silk is seamed and gathered at the bodice is so figure-flattering (then again, Lola looks good in most anything, being a size 2 and 6 feet tall). And the skirt is that bias-cut drapeyness yum.
No labels...
I agree that it's acrylic, probably the exterior as well as the lining. And I can see some man wearing this to go hunting. Love the funny sideways fly zip. What a hoot.
Hi -- This is from the estate of that lady who had nothing more recent than the early 1970s. This skirt, based on the length and the pattern seems to be 70s. BUT... with this skirt were three Victorian/Edwardian items -- a muff, a dress, and a nightgown. They are entirely hand-finished, with...
Hi Pinkcoke -- First off, I'm no expert, but have been handling a lot of hats and doing a lot of research of late. You can tell fur felt from wool by taking a close look at it. See if you see short little straight hairs, all matted together. If so, it's fur felt, not wool. Also, it tends to be a...
Well, I could just call it "mid-century" and be dead-on accurate ; ). It's in excellent condition, except for the tetanus-inducing pins. Looks brand new really.
Thanks for the comments.
This lovely glass bead necklace comes from the estate of a woman with many lovely items, mostly 40s/50s/60s. She'd passed away more than 10 years before her son contacted me to clean out her home. So, in 2001, she was over 90, if that provides any addtl. info.
It has no marks of any kind. If...
For me, another helpful clue is the size. Have you tried it on? If that dress fits like a modern UK12 (US10), that's more evidence it's 80s, even without knowing the maker's labeling history. Something about the edges of the ruffles looks "new" to me, as well. Pretty color, metallic or not : ).
FYI, the pins were actually rusted to the hat. I managed to remove them to take a look (not without stabbing myself!), but replaced them as they'd been, afterward. The woman who owned the hat died recently at age 90+. Caretaker selling the items said she'd bought nothing new (other than pjs) in...
