Wow! I'm sure it will repair easily and nicely and that your SIL's father can test it for you. The jewelers have these special kits with various chemicals.
There's really no doubt. You can't have a coat older than 1974 with that Union label. It didn't exist before 1974. The only question is whether the coat is from the 70s, 80s or early 90s, and it certainly looks 80s to me. The handwritten label likely refers to alterations. Nicer department...
Ah, Maltby, I see you have found my dress. I wondered where I'd left it. You can just ship it back to me and I'll pay you for the postage : ). Seriously... that dress. (a) are you going to sell it and (b) if so, what's the waist on the bodice? It looks tiny. But I hold out hope. -- Liza
Can you...
That ILGWU label was used only from 1974-1995, so it HAS to be from somewhere in there. Can't be any younger as that union label did not exist prior to 1974.
Sometimes the cut tag will give you a clue. You can recognize what it said if it's a really familiar tag, or you can tell from the way it's sewn in, or how it feels, whether it was older or newer. This thing reminds me of a Jer Marai thing I had a while back. Super sexy instead of super cute...
Gah! That's gorgeous. Looks like silk faille to me. Kinda rough/scratchy and even a little woolie feeling, yes? Maggie (DeniseBrain) is the fabric guru. Maybe she'll drop by.
I bought a VERY old, VERY disgusting down pillow at the thrift store because I needed down to stuff a reproduction Victorian muff. I could barely stand to touch it.
I put the thing in a giant wash bag and put that into the washing machine, with a ton of vodka (my go-to yuck-killer, I fill the...
Lovely christening gowns. Very difficult to tell the age on things like this as they haven't changed much over time. Complicating matters is that they are often made, for sentimental reasons, from the handed-down antique garments of relatives. So, new dress, antique fabric or similar scenario...
Mary, to me it looks like a 1920s chemise with the ribbon straps missing. The way it gathers in at the waist is what makes me think so. I have a slip from this era and it has a very similar look to it.
One dead giveaway is the RN#. The first one ever, #13670, was issued in 1959. Thus, anything with an RN# can't be any older than 1959 as the labels did not yet exist. That said, it can be any year younger, provided the label is still in production. This dress looks late 70s/early 80s to me, as...
Glad to have you here, Lost Angels.
It could be 80s. To me, everything from late 80s to now looks exactly the same, and I tend to lose track of time, LOL. I don't think it's any older than that. We can see what others think.
Hello, Lost Angels. Looks modern to me. Could be 90s (which, to me, is "modern"). So pretty. Love the color. Mike Benet dresses always have that "well-made" feel to them. And the tag can be misleading as it looks old, but the company was only founded in the early 60s. They are still in business...
Hi!
I visited the Guo Pei: Couture Beyond exhibit at Atlanta's own SCADFash museum last weekend.
Come read about it and (pretty please) leave any comment on the blog itself, if you would be so kind!
Thank you...
I don't know that the Mike Benet label has ever changed much. It looked old-school even in the 70s. The white dress looks 60s to me, but could be more recent. It's only been around since the early 60s, anyway... even though the styling of the label looks older.
Thank you, Barbara.
As for the wire... I really mucked up the project, so it's on hold until I finish a gift for a sick friend. Right now, the hat is closer in size to a flying saucer than a beret. So yes, I will eventually need the wire... but not as soon as I'd thought I would! I'm so...
I am terrified to even go look. I could easily put myself in the poorhouse. As you know, I often say "Marzilli" in place of "unsurpassed" and "holycow."
Thanks, ladies. I appreciate your taking the time to read and for your kind comments! Wish folks would comment on the blog, but I think people are generally hesitant to do so for some reason. It's a mystery, but it's true. I got a ton of comments on my FB Page, as well. But no one posts on the...
Latest post on the From My Closet blog at Better Dresses Vintage.
Feel free to let me know what you think by leaving a comment on the blog itself (love it, hate it, either response is fine by me).
Thanks...
