Thankyou! Glad to know that I'm getting better with some dating! 60s hats they are!
I was told that the suitcase was used to take gear to the theatre/dance school but obviously that's what they used it as, not necessarily it's geniune use. Did think it was a bit odd. Make sense now...
Love the trunk and if I was lucky enough to own it, I'd leave it as it is, all shabby chic tho with a good airing! Shame I live in the UK, darn!!! :powwows: Still love the wasp/bee work, so intricate and sweet. Thanks for sharing the dresses & all the informative threads.
Sarah
:hiya: again, here are two more hats that I would like to pin down date wise. If I was to give it ago I think both of them might be early 60s???? (the first one has J Jones label, but cant' find nowt on name) What do you think? :help:
Oh, I've also added this dance/theatre carry case (not...
:hiya: I've acquired some hats but need some help dating them! The last one sadly is badly foxed which is such a shame as it's my favourite!
The blue felt? hat has been taken from the front, the brown raffia from the side and back to show the bow. The off white straw hat from the side and...
It has got a kind of 30s/40s feel re the colours and there is a button on the strap which seems to be exactly like, and even the same colour as the ones on my 'fancy/ho down dress' that was narrowed down to late 30/early 40s. Thankyou once again! I do appreciate everyone taking the time to...
 Ok, that's wonderful! Nice to pin this down. Late 50's/early 60's brocade lurex weave...it now has an identity bless it! Is there a market for this type of robe? Or is it best left in my own wardrobe?
Sarah
ps Mary, I keep meaning 2 say that I really like your avatar, quite...
If you're thinking of flock or lame, then it's not those fabrics tho do look so from pics? Its silk & silk machine embroidered and has a silk lining. I was playing with the fabric last night and under the light the silk goes from a blue to a mauve, quite irridescent, really pretty. Or do u...
:jawdrop: I wouldn't hv been able to stop shaking if I'd opened a trunk like that! Really enjoyed reading all the threads & learning. Beautiful beautiful gowns...want, want, want, sigh. They do look like bees or wasps on that last gown, totally divine.
:help: I'm unsure if this kimono style dressing gown is vintage or a 2008 1 of a billion knockout as so many around. It wld be nice if it was vintage but as I love the colours I'll probably end up keeping this one for myself!
Sarah
ps If I were to go with my gut instinct I would lean...
Thanks for the feedback. The auctioneer said it was an old plastic, which doesnt sound as glamorous as cellouloid or ivory! (tho I thought celluloid is what the old plastic was called.....) ho hum. It's lovelier in the flesh (in my opinion & in good condition). It's going into the auction...
:hiya: I'm gonna be brave and say this brolly/parasol is 1940s but this is the first one I've ever bought, so I'll leave it to you the experts & c what u think!
Sarah
Thanks, tho I need to clean the cuffs and the yoke/collar as well, so gonna be hard to keep the sequinned top separate! :damnit: Wish I never bought it now!
:hiya: This is a 1930s bag that I picked up at a boot fair here in the UK (bargain). I just love the tapestry fabric & the carved frame with the little tab. The lining is sweet, mauve/green etc with a really funky bird. This will be going into a live auction next month so it's with the...
Yes, I agree, I can just see this dress coming back from the drycleaners with the stains still there and what a waste of money that wld be. I'll have to give it a go and test the back of the hem as u say. The dress is such a vivid yellow that anything shows so that's what I'm concerned about...
Thanks for feedback, so verdict's out: Early 80's, not exactly vintage vintage, but what the hey...and yes, first one is very Princess Di. Thankyou again..I'll be back lol! :D
ok, I'll do a burn test..I looked burn tests up recently so I'll give it a go. Well u can c my confusion with the dresses now, everything conflicts and its not hard to confuse me lol! Think I'll go get me some matches..... ;)
There are absolutely no labels at all on either. There's a metal YKK zipper on the side of the blue dress and buttons up the back. The silver one also has buttons up the back and a very small plastic/nylon YKK zipper below the waist. Even tho there are buttonholes for the back buttons on the...
:hiya: I have a couple of dresses that I'm really struggling to date. They both have no labels and might be made by the same person/establishment as they use the same make buttons & then cover them & same make of zip. The pic on the back of the blue dress isnt so good, but there is a big bow...
Thanks for all the feedback. I don't think the dress is ruined. I guess it's whether I try and sell it at the vintage fair as is or go for daring the dry cleaning. I do think that the dress wld be better shortened above knee length and once again it's whether I do that (have to send it to a...
Maggie...I would have gone with dry cleaning (that's the cleaning advice label on the dress, but as we all know more harsher chemicals are used now and the dry cleaner was worried that black spray affect on the top (whatever it is) will be removed by dry cleaning & that will so spoil the dress...
Hi ev1!
This dress is more of a vivid yellow in reality so would need your sunglasses to look at this one! The dress is by Peter Barron London & was wondering if this is late 60s or early 70s dress? The whirly/spiral black design seems to have been sprayed onto the sequinned top as there...
:icon_dante: jus woken up & hving my 1st coffee & reading your replies. Thanks for all the feedback, I've got plenty of ideas re the belt now & like the baby doll heels idea. You are all fab..Thankyou! Sarah
Thank u both so much for your ideas on the belt...will definitely take that on board and have a look around. Good re side buttons & pads, together with all the info from other members on fabric etc, it looks like I do have a vintage dress wihch pleases me no end! Early 40s sounds so right now...
Thanks again Nicole & this is the last and final question...honest! The belt loops are very big on the dress, so the belt (which is missing) must have been rather wide, so is that more 40s? The reason for the question is that I want to buy an appropriate belt as I think that wld set the dress...
I must admit I do so hate that wiggle term too as u see it every where so I really apologise for daring to suggest it....ps I had just woken up & was only on my first coffee :icon_dante: so my faculties weren't fully awake! ps also hate 'bombshell', that's so overused.
Thanks for that Nicole, it's all coming together now and making sense! I don't want to sell the dress as a possible 40s when it's not and so just trying to get my facts right! Just looking at the shoulder pads, and I've noticed they're only sewn into the top of the puffy sleeves to make little...
Thanks 4 thinking it might b 40's too ;) I did buy it online so these two pics r from there so I've had to decapitate one, but yes, I think it's very cute modelled & u can get more of a feel for the dress x
Thanks Nicole for info & giving me a glimmer of hope that it's a vintage dress! Now I know about rayon and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Would the side buttons fit in with a 40s piece and the polyster/crepe material on the skirt part? Any other clues I need 2 look for that it might...
