Thanks, Karen. I read that thread at the time, but it means more now that I have this jacket. I will certainly be on the lookout for cool vintage menswear from now on.
Northstar Vintage - Susan, a VFG member, I think, answered my query on the VCA board. She sold a similar jacket recently for $390! She said it's a "Hollywood" jacket. I listed it tonight and used that term as well as rockabilly. It's not indexed yet on ebay, but I am eager to see how it does.
I wish I had seen that movie last night instead of the one I did see--Original Sin with Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie. What a stinker! I'll watch for the next showing of Lovely to Look At.
When that button first appeared, before the site redesign, I thought to myself, "Why do we have a button just for Dior labels?" :puzzled:
It took me a few days to realize what was going on. I need an embarrassed emoticon.
We called soft drinks "tonic" when I was growing up in Cambridge, Mass. I saw a research study once that said that there is only one tiny corner of the world that uses that term -- Boston and environs.
I also considered cutting down just the lining to make a belt. I am now afraid to cut it at all. Instead I will search for a sash belt that looks ok with it and mention the other options in the listing. Thanks everybody for your advice.
Thank you, Lizzie. I'll make good use of that info.
I posted to the Ask Andy forum about this robe and got some quick answers. I recommend going there for questions on high end men's things.
It was suggested that I have a tailor cut the robe down a couple of inches to make a sash. I then...
There is a second label sewn into the back of the main label. It has a handwritten date (?) of 02-06-55.
The belt is missing. It needs a few stitches on one of the seams in the lining and it needs to be cleaned. Otherwise, it's in good condition.
Dareuc, thanks for the link to Ask Andy. I...
Sorry, no pics yet. I just got home and it's dark. I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them. Right now there are just 3 Sulka robes on ebay--one current and two completed. These must be very rare. Mine is orange, cream, and brown, with an orange lining and orange piping. It's all silk, of...
I enjoyed reading this article, especially since I dealt with Clair Watson recently selling my Lanvin dress. Doyle will no longer accept individual items for auction; they want only collections. That's ok with me. I didn't think they did such a hot job for me.
This dress is made of the very distinctive yarn and stitch that St. John calls santana. The label is similar to 80s de la Renta labels on the VFG label resource, but the dress seems more like 70s to me. Now did Oscar copy St. John or did St. John copy Oscar? Like St. John, the edges are not...
Paul, I think they used round elastic garters that they could roll up or down on their legs. I remember my mother had these before panty hose were invented.
This has happened often when I list something with acknowledged problems. I list it "as is" and describe the problems thoroughly, and show lots of pictures of the problems. Immediately I get a lot of watchers and a bid or two. I don't seem to get that much attention on the better stuff I list...
I agree with you about the tweaking from time to time. I don't think there is a classic blazer. Look at all the boxy shaped blazers hanging on the thrift racks now. Nobody wants them.
