    1950s? 1950's? 50's? 50s?

    I'm a serial-comma user too--fussy, careful, and persnickety.

    1950s? 1950's? 50's? 50s?

From "The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation:" So this is the rule, but again it doesn't help if we know the rule but those who are searching do not.

    Vintage Sewing Patterns

I really appreciate reading and learning about patterns. It's all brand new information to me and what a fun way to learn. The VFG is fortunate to have your expertise.

what decade do you favour the most vintage wise?

How odd that nobody wants 30s stuff. Some of you said late 30s/early 40s, but nobody entered 30s on the poll. Why is that?

The height of Luxury ~ Vicuna Coat!

What a great find, Lizzie. You will be rich! I've never seen one in navy blue, not that I've seen many at all. I thought they were all brown or camel color.

    boggled by broadtail?!?

Yes, broadtail can be blonde and it brings big bucks. I don't know if it's dyed or naturally blonde, but it is very desirable. I remember some huge sales recently. I don't know what kind of fur the trim is. I found this on ebay. It seems to be the only one at all similar. It's mink with...

This dress has no obvious appealing key words

Good suggestions, Chris. I'm going to switch the gallery photo to the one with the red jacket and kimono sleeve, as you suggested. It's not a clear photo, but it might spark interest because of the color.

This dress has no obvious appealing key words

It's getting no looks whatsoever. What more can I say besides Japan Kimono Style Silk Evening Dress Black Red? This is why I try to stick to known brand names that serve as good key words on their own. Japanese style dress

'60s St. John Dress, Belt & Cardigan

I've handled a lot of St. Johns but I've never seen lace hem tape on any of them. Usually the hemline is knitted closed, not sewn at all, though I think some do have sewn hems. That is very beautiful. I'd use both turquoise and green in the title. I would guess the belt buckle is original to...

It's Sweater Time...What do I do with this one?

I'm having poor luck with men's cashmere sweaters of the same style. There are very few looks, never mind watchers or bids. Maybe men need to actually experience the cold weather before they think ahead to the fact that they will need a sweater soon.

Vintage Chanel and other luxury brands on ebay- help!!!!!

The ebay Clothing & Accessories Board, and now the Shoes, Purses board, have some real authentication mavens. They also offer great advice on how to sell your authentic item. What I've got out of reading about it there is that if you state you are unsure if the item is authentic, it will be...

    Need help dating two coats

I love the Hermes. It looks like gabardine to me, probably wool gabardine. I would call it a trench coat. The second layer of cloth across the shoulder area is what makes it trench to my mind. I can't help on dating either of them.

why is this getting no looks?

Turtleneck is a very hot key word. If you can fit it in there, I'd put it in the title. It is a very beautiful sweater.

Is this sweater garish or is it nice and what is this collar called

I'm not sure if I like these funny mink balls scattered across the collar, but it sure is different. What is this kind of collar called? It's similar to a boat neck and similar to a cowl neck, but not really either. The label is Cyrus, made in Hong Kong.

The British Boutique Movement - Part II

Thanks so much for offering all this fabulous information here. Even though I was a young woman during this era, I never did dress that mod-ishly. At that time, these designs seem outlandish to me. I do think the styles are more British than American. Now if I were to find anything like what...

I am now a mystery shopper

I had applied for this work several months ago when I saw their ad in Craigslist. They contacted me recently and I started today. The study is confidential, of course (that's why they call it "mystery shopping.") Generally though, I go into branches of a large bank and ask for information...

    RIP, Filene's Boston

I read that Filene's Basement is not affected by this buyout. Thank God. I grew up in Boston and remember spending many happy hours down there. The original Basement is a real basement on the same level with the subway. I bought my wedding gown there for $11.
