I have enjoyed wasting entirely tooooo much time in that great pattern database. Thanks again for telling us about that.
As soon as I saw the well-organized and easily-searched database I thought it would be one heck of a great resource for us to have, too! Some century down the road...
It took me a minute to find the pattern archive sign-in screen, so here is (I hope) a link directly to it:

Thank you for the information, Claire.
Some of you may remember my sometimes-sad adventures with our cats bringing baby bunnies into the house through the dog flap. The cats are in lockdown now, but one cat slipped out a few days ago and, sure enough, came trotting right back in with another baby bunny in his mouth. Fortunately the...
I am going to drift away a little from my initial post about style changes and address one reason that was not mentioned in the article, but that touches on one of your thoughtful observations.
As I prefer to amble along in clothing that is comfortable, more than anything else, from whatever...
I have been mulling over something I read recently in a 1960 fashion article from a Manitoba newspaper:
"Historically, a silhouette remains in fashion from six to ten years. During this period, each season designers use their talent and artistry to create new styles within the framework of the...
I was not aware of the JWS source and will go back to look at it more carefully, but would like to add a word of caution about using colored acid-free tissue paper (which I never saw before). My concern is that if it gets wet or damp you may have color bleeding onto the garment. If they have...
I found another Flah's ad, from 1937, and it is in a Syracuse newspaper and the address is 419 South Salina (good eyes!).
It also says: "Nat Lewis, American designer, keeps his fall handbags very simple in design, but makes up for it in richness of material..." As this ad is seven years after...
...and I think the similarity of the lettering of "Jim Bob's" on your label and on that business card, the close-enough locations, and the leather connection with both the Iraqi Jim Bob and your Jim Bob make it very likely that that is the same person. Maybe brought back by a veteran...
Anne, I can see why you love Lewis bags. I can't remember ever hearing of Lewis bags, but when I saw this 1942 ad for them, I, too, became enamored of them. What great bags!
I only found tantalizing other little bits of information about Lewis. One was in a 1941 article that said:
"And so...
I will continue to search for more information about Lewis bags, but I found that they were designed by an American designer named David Lewis.
A 1945 ad states:
[i]"It has become a fine old tradition for those who proudly carry a LEWIS bag to replenish their wardrobes in this annual event...
I can only answer as a buyer and that is that I would rather have the option of buying fewer than the whole lot. I don't think their worth is increased as a complete set.
You may deem their worth as a single pair, though, not worth all the trouble of lising them singly, so perhaps a good...
Very sweet gloves!
I don't remember if I got this link through here, so I can't properly credit the source, but I find this link to be a helpful reference.
These are the last photos of the trunk contents and are of the gold gown posted earlier. Re the question about the appliques, this is a closeup of them and I think they are flowers...
This is a slightly better view of the complicated front, but the second photo is a not-very-good shot of what...
Thank you all again for the information about the trunk contents and for the enthusiastic comments about them. I won't weary you with any more photos after these last two posts, but I would like to ask some construction questions on this additional trunk gown, which I will assume is also a...
Thank you all for the help with and kind words about the Trunk That Keeps On Giving. By the way, I am happy to give away the trunk if anyone is near northern NJ. It is wood, painted black (with a few floral appliques that I think come off easily) and flat on top, so it makes a great coffee table...
I decided to subject the stays to a hi-res scan and I see striations that suggest some animal product. I have never seen a whalebone anything, but don't the striations indicate a bone product?
Thanks.
I used the 53" roll of photography paper for the first time last night and now I see that it slowly unrolls itself and bulges behind the mannequin. How do you keep the paper from slowly unrolling?
I only soak washable textiles in Orvus paste. It is used by most textile conservators, I believe, and used by collectors of antique quilts, to clean the quilts.
Thank you all so much for the explanation that clarified why this gown so confused me. I dug out everything in the trunk last night and some of what I found underscores what you all surmised (see photos). What still suprises--and confused--me is that I have a collection of gowns as far back as...
Mary Jane,
I am sorry that I am asking something that is difficult to answer with only photos, but I can reassure you that the gown is decidedly antique. I have a number of antique dresses here and am quite confident that this is quite old, but, as I noted, the ball gowns always seem timeless...
Thank you for the enthusiasm, but there is no need to be jealous. It is an interesting dress, but there are small areas of shattered silk and the added weight of the metal threads make it very fragile, so it will likely have to go into an (archival) box and, thus, not be enjoyed much after...
With apologies for the rough photos, as the gown came right out of the trunk and onto the mannequin.
I am usually able to get the approximate era of antique dresses, but the ball gowns always confound me.
The bodice is silk and the tulle/net is embellished with a heavy metal thread. The...
I am so sorry to read of your terribly sad tribulations and awed by your resiliency. I am so impressed by your great kindness in nursing your ailing spouse back to health, as he was clearly in need of help in more ways than just his health. I am sure that your greatest gift to a fellow human was...
