The vertical fabric on bodices is a flange. You described it well as: "... two vertical pleated panels that are attached on the vertical side toward the centre and on the top and bottom at the shoulder and waistline, but free on the other vertical side toward the sleeves." Marian

It is clearly home sewn, probably to be worn under a short jacket or bolero. I think it is probably 1960's, judging by the shape and back buttons. Marian

I remember tying belts in the back to get a smaller waist effect. Of course it depended on the cut of the dress. Marian
