1900s dress questions

I just bought this dress from an antique store. The seller had a $25.00 price on it with “1970s maxi dress.” It closes in the back with hooks, so I felt pretty safe in assuming it’s much older than the 70s so I bought it. I actually feel bad for that $25.00 price on it, like I did something wrong. Have you ever corrected a seller on the date and/or price of their vintage? I probably would have if the seller had been present. It was one of those antique co-ops.

My other question is about the dress. Aside from wanting to know a more precise date for it, am I correct in supposing this would have been worn under something? It looks more like an under dress to me, especially the way it doesn’t close in the back. Thanks!

Lovely! It is a dress, not meant to be worn under anything. A slip would be worn underneath. I would date it to the 'Teens WWI era.

Often referred to as lingerie dresses.

Thank you! I believe I have a slip for it. It’s such a romantic looking dress!

I posed her outside! Thank you, I bought it and got out of there like who did it and ran, feeling horribly guilty, but not so guilty that I didn’t snap it up. lol
