1948 on this men's suit?

1948 on this men\'s suit?

There are several numbers on the label of this jacket, but most are hard to make out except 48. Does this look right for 1948. Super wide lapels, slot side pockets (no flaps). Pants are high waisted and cuffed. Six button vest with four welt pockets.

THANKS!

Quite probably -
do the pants have a zipper or button fly? a watch pocket on the waist seam? not that those would date to inconclively, but a button fly and 3 pc DB might mean prewar. Does the jacket have a back vent?

It looks like a traditional, not forward thinking suit of the immediate post war era.

I take it the 48 does not refer to size. If it did - you would have a real gold mine!

"I take it the 48 does not refer to size. If it did - you would have a real gold mine!" I can wish! lol

Button fly - four (inside placket) plus 2. No pocket on the waist seam. No vent on the jacket, but it does have vented cuffs with faux buttons holes.

Thanks, Hollis!

You might check the width of the trouser cuff. Those jacket lapels look quite wide to me as this could be an earlier suit. Perhaps you could show the label as '48' does not necessarily indicate the year. It could be pre-WW11.

I agree: I think it's earlier.

They stopped making waistcoats in 1941 due to fabric shortages (not sure if that was just Aus and UK, so may not apply to US) so I would put it pre-41. It's a great suit.

Is 48 a good selling size? I have several and can't move them. All my customers want 38-42. Hmm, maybe I should ebay or Fedora lounge?

One thing I forgot to mention is that this is a Sevile Row suit (George something or other and sons).

Thanks, Nicole. I don't know much about Fedora Lounge as far as selling, but I think you would do VERY WELL with a size 48 on ebay.

Thanks, Vertugarde. Although I haven't done the measurements, yet, I know it's a very small suit (36/38). The width of the cuffs on a 48 suit would be bigger than those on a 36. It would have to be in relation to something I think. But what?

I think you may be getting sizes and dates confused. The suit is a 36/38" chest? You don't say what the trouser waist is or the inside leg measurement is.

The width of trouser bottoms varied but were proportionally standard when it was fashionable to have wider trouser cuffs or 'turn-ups' in the 1920's and 30's. It can be a useful indicator to date the suit.

I assume you mean Savile Row? In which case this is a suit made in London. If you can show the label that might help

Okay, with the button fly , no vent + vest I agree with the pre-war estimate.

Nicole, if you have SZ 48 period suits, they should do well on ebay. Especially if the pants waist size is proportionate. I don't think you can even mention selling on the Fedora Lounge. They are death on sellers posting there.
