1950s Red Organza Prom Dress

I love this and am so tempted to keep it. Why, I don't know? So it can hang with the rest of my unworn vintage, I guess. Ack, where was all this stuff whenI was younger?

Anyway, my irridescent red organza prom dress/ballgown.
Does anyone know what the term for the fabric weave that has two threads woven together to create a new look and color?. This looks like it has red and gold woven together to create a subtle shine. Very lovely.

Hmm...is it like sharkskin? Or is there no color change/you can't see both colors intermittently?

That is so dreamy, Kelly :::sigh::::

Here is the bust shot. I don't think it's sharksking as it is not that shimmery. It's a Shall We Dance dress, isn't it? Remember the scene where Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner waltz around the floor. Ah well.

Ohh I know what you mean - when the fabric has that iridescent shimmer effect, right? Hmmm . . . sorry I don't know the specific term for that - but that dress is a killer! So elegant, and fab color!

Oh yeah, The King and I. But she had serious 25 crinoline action going on...this is the infinitely more wearable interpretation :) I wonder if i have a pic of that somewhere...

You guys may laugh at me, but I wore a dress with the same material like that in a high school dance. We called it a "shimmer dress" because it would catch the light when you were dancing.

But hey I could definetly be wrong b/c high school kids love to come up with fashion names all the time.

:puzzled:

Kelly -

I may be wrong, but if it's that woven fabric that runs red fiber one way and gold the other, I was told that would be called "shot organza."

But any time I had an item made with shot fabric, I always also explained in the auction text. "Shot" doesn't mean much to a lot of people.

Where's Hollis? (There's nothing that woman doesn't know!) She'd know for sure.

(Well, I had to attempt to help any gal who quotes BillTheCat, didn't I?)

:hiya: Hi Carolyne

I don't think that sounds sillyat all! Much more elegant than the assymetrical drop waisted numbers that were rampant at my prom :)

Hey, Kelly.

...same for me... "shot" (whatever)" ala shot taffeta, shot organza...

I messed up the listing anyway. Grrr. Had it at a 49.99 BIN instead of opening bid so I'll change to Shot Organza. It looked like organza originally.

Thanks as always!!

I had one like this before. Someone called it irredescent organza. Nice dress.
