A 50s Charles James on the Oscar red carpet!

This gown got voted Worst dress!

Ugh... whoever said that! Well, I guess it shows just how different people's tastes are. But there's places where she's on the best-dressed list.

I just watched the first part of the ceremony and saw the dress in action - beautiful!

I am revving up to watch Fashion Police tonight with Joan Rivers and I am sure they will talk about the dress!

Actually, I didn't love the dress on Marisa Tomei. The dress is stunning, but she looks a little washed out in it, and the charcoal grey of the satin should look fantastic against her pale skin. I think she needed some major lip colour to compete and maybe more glamorous jewellery (imagine it with Love that Red lips and a Harry Winston diamond necklace...) I just see the dress as it is and don't even notice Marisa Tomei in it. Also, apparently she tripped on it a couple of times going up the red carpet (what is it with these women who can't wear something that ia 1/4 inch OFF the floor - I feel like there is an entire generation of stupidity out there when it comes to hemlengths!

I'm not loving the current fashion for nude lips with everything - a gown like that deserves the reddest red and Marisa could have done something better with her hair too. I agree that a nice sparkling necklace would set off that neckline a bit better. I honestly wonder if the modern woman has forgotten how to do glamour! They seem to think that a little goes a long way but the red carpet is a time to pull out the stops - whenever I dress someone for a big occasion I have to tell them it's not a time for subtle, it's a time to pull out the stops!

Love the Gatsby story - it's just like a director to have no concern for the costumes. He probably thought that they were his to play with and afterwards they'd just wash up fine, having no idea (just like the people who want to buy original '20s for parties - shudder).

A while ago Spielberg's production of The Pacific rolled out of town - they had hired costumes from from many vintage shops around Australia but found when it was time to send them back that many were damaged or lost, so they came to Circa and I was lucky to be able to replace them all. They didn't even try to negotiate on price, it was still cheaper and easier than admitting what had happened.

Re: Titanic, the costumes were the best thing about that film, I really hope they weren't originals that got destroyed.

Brenda, thanks for the Lily et Cie article - it's good stuff!

That's me on a bad day, really fed up with people mishandling the vintage that I've painstakingly unpicked and reconstructed, all the work done by hand. I wish that I could open only by appointment and I wish that I could tell people how to handle the clothes.

We do like to measure them before letting them try anything on, because I cry when they rip them (and dresses still get ripped at least twice a week). Sometimes we give them a petticoat to wear and when they come out of the fitting room, we will gently place the dress over them - many people can not be trusted to treat vintage well in the fitting room.

So yes, Rita might be icy but I understand why she's so protective! And my stock isn't anywhere near as fabulous as hers!

She was on the worst dressed list on Joan's Fashion Police as well. George what's-his-face-opolis said he thought it was Marisa that was at fault, not the dress - referring to her flat, hanging hair.

I was told that the dresses from Great Gatsby were put into garbage bags and by the time they were returned, they were covered with mold!

Shudder...

And I actually thought she looked adorable in the dress--as if she was surprisingly comfortable and enjoying herself. But I guess that's totally beside the point when you're on display on the red carpet--it's the viewer that "counts"!

I so agree! I do love the Charles James dress and feel its being voted worst dress is a gigantic faux pas! However, it most definitely needed a neckpiece--as did 99% of the abundant bare necklines. I have nothing against bare necklines, mind you, but they can be made so much more fabulous with the proper neck piece to set them off to perfection. They can enhance, not detract from, the gown. And these "stars" don't seem to understand this--this has become a very disturbing, IMHO, trend. I think Marisa Tomei looked fine in the gown--although it seems not to have been altered quite right for fit and shouldn't be dragging on the floor.... But I would love to have seen her hair done in a dramatic upsweep to complement the drama of the dress. And some sparkle at the neckline certainly would have helped.

If you look back at her red carpet appearances over the last few years, this is more makeup and hair styling than usual for her. She's had a pattern of looking good from the neck down.

I think she went a little out her comfort zone in honor of this dress, but she didn't go quite far enough.

Not sure I agree about a necklace - sometimes they can detract rather than add. I do agree that her make-up is underwhelming - her hair is "meh" to use a new favorite word - and the dress does not fit her well. I think she needed some really strong makeup and upswept hair. When I looked at the close-up I was surprised to see that the jewelry was a combination of yellow and blue (yellow sapphire or citrine?) and sapphires- so she did have some color in the earrings and bracelet that didn't translate well to photos.

that's some small comfort, i suppose. i agree about the hair, but a charles james should *not* be on anyone's worst dressed list.

barbarians.

How true....

On another Oscar appearance.... did you all see Nicole Kidman's fabulous antique diamond necklace? I think her Dior gown (which I'm not crazy about anyway, except for the lovely bodice) would have been quite "meh" without it....

scroll down for lots of photos, including a close up of the choker toward the bottom--boy, would I love to wake up some morning and find that in my jewelry box! And I am NOT a diamond person, to tell the truth....

I'm a bit underwhelmed by the gowns chosen this year - most of them are pretty middle of the road safe and (as I mentioned before) if you can't pull out the stops at the Oscars when can you! I would have thought the actors have a huge incentive to look good as it generates media attention and yet so many of them could have done better!

I've followed Nicole Kidman since she was a kid of 13 (we grew up in the same part of Sydney) and I'm disappointed by how often she misses the mark - she has every reason to look fabulous every time (and as an aside, I hate what she's done to her lips and boobs!)

My favourites are probably the oldest and youngest - Helen Mirren and Hailee from True Grit. Both age appropriate too.

Helen Mirren is fabulous--always! And her ensembles always look marvelous--there's a lady who not only knows what looks good on her, but is self confident and aware of herself, and not afraid to look age appropriate. Such sexy traits in a woman. My DH thinks she is one hot lady--and so do I! Not to mention what a great actress she is!

Anne, you just took the words out of my mouth about Helen Mirren, she looks amazing, as always. I love how she's older and so damn sexy, without looking like she's pretending to still be in her 20s. Very inspiring.
