Follow-up:
The advertising is correct, they are indeed washable! I machine-washed the dirtier pair as a test case (though they both smell awful!) on the delicate cycle (intermittent agitation) with a little generic Woolite. I added a little Eucalan to the rinse and they've been air-drying for the last couple days away from sunlight or heat. They look and smell great!
