Acetate Fabric?

I found a deadstock plus size dress that is 100% Acetate.

I know a silly ? but is there a way to check for strength without washing it?

The paper tag says to hand wash.

Sovereign Textiles. Anyone know this fabric name?

Has covered buttons. I am thinking 1940s/50s but no label.

Would it be common for a seamstress to keep the fabric label and this be homemade?

I would think this was commercially made with that kind of hang tag hanging from it. Maybe it has just one of those teensy size labels hidden somewhere. My hunch tends towards 50s. Not sure about washing or not though.

My word. I looked harder after your reply and it does have a tiny size label. 24 1/2.

Acetate can be a lot like nylon. Try wetting a rag and rubbing and out of the way area to check for color-fastness. If the color is colorfast, you can soak it in cold water. If not, dry clean it. Sell as is, or try the soak (take the label off !) and keep the label so you can put it back on.
I just noticed the "rolling in the towel" thing. I always do that!

Agree with a '50s date and I would hand wash this dress in lukewarm water: the print should be fine. Acetate is a good and strong material unless it's suffered damage. Agree with Karin again that this dress would have come with the swing tag with fabric care instructions: this is how it was done in the days before care labels were sewn into garments. The information they contain can be really useful and quite charming.

I also agree that hand-washing acetate shouldn't be a problem. With that kind of fabric, I tend to press it before it gets too dry.

Thank you all. I decided to not wash it as it was NOS.
It does appear to be very strong also.
