I saw the other odor question and it made me realize someone here may be able to help me with something similar. I have a beautiful leather FURLA purse that I found at a thrift store, but it reeks of cigarettes. Anyone know how to get rid of such a stench on a bag? THANKS!!

I'm not sure this this will work with cigarette smoke, but I've had some success getting musty, mildewy odors out of vintage purses using baking soda. I pour it into an open plastic container - like a large juice bottle top, close the purse and leave it for a day or so. Even if you spill the contents (which I usually do) it wipes off or you can brush it out. I live near the ocean and have a big problem with mildrew and leather getting musty. Someone told me to store my handbags with a bar of soap in them. I've tried it but it doesn't always work. The best thing is to use them frequently.

You may also leave it open for several days to air it out, if it has a flat bottom place a jar of white vinegar in it & be patient(2ish days)! If you want to air it outdoors... do so out of the sun. Heat will just "bake" in the odor! Pew-Wee!
I like Linn's method also!

Number one thing is to wipe the purse down, get the smoke goop off of it. You would not believe how much tar gets onto the air molecules around a smoker. Stuff it full of newspaper wads, and put it somewhere protected to air out. A covered screened in porch area is great, even just putting it in the car trunk for a while if you don't have a covered porch, will be better than stinking up the house.

Wow, thanks!! I do have a screen porch, and I am going to try the baking soda tip, that makes sense!! I live in south Florida so I know what you mean about the mildew etc., it's very humid down here, even this time of year!!
