Anyone know hair?

Maggie, the Amalie do although so cute, I think would be too difficult to keep up and it would not allow you to do anything else with it.

I too think a medium length best especially if you still want to play with styling. Layering should definitely help give you a little extra body...your hair looks fine...but it is frustrating to have wispy hair that cannot be controlled, I do hope you have found yourself a good cutter.

My DH has very fine wispy hair and he has the most difficult time finding a good cutter, even though he pays high prices for his haircuts, he has finally found one and she has given him 3 great cuts in a row! He is happy and so am I, as it's frustrating to pay out good money and come home with a so so cut that grows out badly!

I'm still indecisive, so I appreciate your further thoughts. I do like to do a French roll Nadine, and can even now, but with the fineness of my hair if I don't goop it up and curl it, it looks almost completely non-existent when I roll it!

Over the weekend I just didn't have time to try getting it cut, then yesterday an old friend I hadn't seen in months commented that my hair was growing out and that she really liked it. Indecision reigns supreme!

Maggie--

I also have very fine, straight hair, but I have a lot of it. Every time I find a new hair stylist, the first comment is always "Oh my gosh, you have so much hair!" You would never guess because it is just so fine and limp.

I have found that the best style for me is fairly short - between chin and mid-neck in length. At that length, I can actually do some styling and it will hold the style for a few hours. Any longer than mid-neck, and the weight of my hair pulls the style right out and it's a limp, lifeless mess. Before Gabriela was born, I got my hair cut every five or six weeks to keep the length manageable. (No time for that now! And I rarely style my hair anymore anyway.)

I have also found that a good stylist is worth her (or his) weight in gold. After many, many years of paying $4.99 for a Great Clips cut, I finally realized that a more expensive cut really is worth it. I used to drive an hour+ to Columbus to pay $45 for a cut at an upscale salon, because that woman knew how to cut hair and would tell me flat-out if a style I was coveting wouldn't work for me. Eventually, I found a local stylist who is only $28 and cuts my hair just as well. I'll never skimp on haircuts again! A good stylist is soooo important.

If your hair can hold style at all, you might want to go with something like Juliette Binoche from Chocolat. I had a very similar cut for a while, and I think it works well with vintage. Even my fine hair held the style, and I loved the length.

Here's another picture.

Oops, I was typing when you posted, Maggie. Does that mean you don't want to mess with curling and spraying it? My Chocolat style did require curlers and plenty of hair spray.

(And, I also like your current length, but if you don't like it - change it! :) )

Whatever style you choose, I have no doubt you will look great! I too have superfine hair that has been getting even finer over the years and I now keep it quite short. I'm able to get body though without any fuss by shampooing with - e.tex, textureline smoothing shampoo by Artec - I wash rinse and go - cause like all fine haired people it only takes minutes for my hair to dry.

Thank you so much for indulging my hair angst everyone! Laura, that's really cute, and I can see you in the style. Unfortunately, I can't achieve that type of do, even with a stylist's help. My hair is resolutely straight, and it takes gobs of hairspray just to bend the ends a little. Weird hair!

I've seen that shampoo Deborah, and I am all about trying anything that adds a little volume.

Hmm Maggie - I have known several people who have dealt with the same problems you are dealing with!

I have VERY fine hair but absolutely tons of it (it's well below my shoulders) and I find that I need to keep a spattering of SHORT layers in there to keep volume otherwise it is limp.

I have also found that Mane & Tail Shampoo (not conditioner!!!) is absolutely amazing stuff. W/ in a few months it thickened up my aunt's barely existent fine hair to the point where she is complemented on it constantly! You buy it in the horse aisle at Petsmart, and some places like Meijer carry it in w/ their regular shampoos. I can't get enough of the stuff!

Also, (ok did I mention I'm a hair product conniseur?) Aveda started making a product called Pure Abundance. Now I am not a fan of the Aveda products but this one I will never be without again! It is a tiny bottle of powder that turns into a liquid when you put it on your hair. You just poof some into the roots, rubs it in and your hair magically turns HUGE! I love huge sexy bed hair and this stuff actually does what I want it to do! It's like $18 and I use mine a few times a week and have had it for well over a year.

I recommend blow drying upside down, and then using that stuff on the crown only - just awesome miracle working stuff!

Good luck!

Hi Maggie

I have been busy designing gardens for a few months now and haven't participated much but I had to make one suggestion...I too have very fine hair and wear it like Mia Farrow. You have a beautiful face and I think you would look tres chic with an uber short cut with a little wisps. It would look great in a slightly more intense shade of red and really make your eyes *pop*...You could still wear the great lipstick etc.
Also, although short hair requires more haircuts, it is easy to maintain and not a whole lot of time is spent on products and fuss-Lorinda

Thank you very much for the continuing expert and thoughtful advice! I hope to get a hair cut tomorrow, and I've written down all the products advised for consideration.

Fact is, having had long hair forever, I feel incapable of going really short. I wish I could do some sort of meaningful test of styles and/or colors before actually doing anything...I'm kind of chicken.

(nice to see you Lorinda, and welcome Anessa!)

I swear, Maggie, you and I must have identical hair!

The one and only time my hair kept a curl longer than 30 minutes was on my wedding day, when I paid someone a hefty price to "do" my hair for me!
I'm not sure WHAT they did, but it held! Mostly, anyway... which is a vast improvement for MY hair!

I did find that when my hair was bobbed short that it seemed WAY thicker than it does when it's longer.
I'm still contemplating, myself (plus, I'm much too broke to PAY someone to do something to my hair! Haha!)... but I can't wait to see what YOU choose to do!

Whatever you choose -- it will look phenominal on you. But - if you're anything like me (other than the hair) you may HATE whatever you choose until you go home, wash it and mess with it yourself.

GOOD LUCK!

Hey Maggie,
I have the totallly opposite problem. My hair is huge. And just randomly wavy in places. I got it thinned and its still impossible. I got it put up for a special occasion and the hair stylist had to use an entire pack of bobby pins. There is a product that made my hair even bigger and might work for u. It's by the brand Got2B and its something about volume and big hair (i can't rember the actual name). It's shampoo and conditioner and they come in red bottles. I picked it up at Kmart. It worked (waaaay too well for me). Just wanted to be helpful.

I got it thinned and its still impossible.
:hysterical: Sorry, with my baby fine hair, just the thought of having to thin hair cracks me up!

I've seen that product and will see if I can pick some up. I've kind of procrastinated at getting a new 'do because it's sweltering here and I like being able to put the hair in a French roll or ponytail.

I saw Amelie for the first time yesterday (due to Sara's hair suggestion) and I LOVE that movie ~and~ Amelie's hair! I could never do that with the skimpy/straight hair I have, but I would try it in a second if I could!

because you have the features and bone structure...a blunt cut will give the appearance of more body and the hair colour ... l'd love to see it a more vivid red , would give the same effect!!

You could sooo carry it off...AND fab FOR ALL THOSE VINTIE PICS!!
I normally steer well clear of topics like this but today once burnt and all that,I going to make the exception and say that agree totally with Sara on this one.

The only other thing I will add is that worth asking around in a few salons and see if any are more helpful than others toward hair advice.

well I have hair, so I'll weigh in...
Mine is fine but I also have tons, SUPER straight, but I like it curly. And you ladies who thought you couldn't get your hair to curl need to get some Caruso steam rollers. I use mine all the time, it takes me 10 minutes and about 6-9 curlers to get a totally retro look.
I also love short hair although mine is quite long (for me) right now.
You should get an A line bob. Short in back (just above the hair line in back) and longer in front. don't be afraid of short hair, hair grows!
also color it! I color my own hair it saves me a ton of money and time. I used to spend $200 a month and 2 hours in a salon, but I use salon color at home (NO BOX COLOR) and it costs me around $10.
I can see you as a blond or a brighter red, with your fair skin.

look at my pics on myspace http://www.myspace.com/ev_eel (I know you are a friend on there) Remeber my hair is straight, get some caruso curlers, and if you need any curler tips, lemme know

Wow, you look SMOKIN' in your blond curls! I now remember I had a set of Caruso rollers back in the early 90s and they did work, until (for lack of products to hold?) the curls sagged. I have verrrry stubborn hair.

The other parts of this equation for me is that I have to get up early and photograph items every day, and my hair has to be good looking but no big hassle. I figure my median year for items I sell is something like 1963, so I want to have a look that is vaguely vintage without being too tied to an era.
