Anyone know what cupro means?

Thank you! I've just spent two days photographing some amazing gowns for the book (I'm writing) and one had a label that said Cupro. I have no idea what it is either, so I'm looking forward to someone enlightening us! I think mine was an Italian label, so perhaps it's Italian for something?

Cupro is an abbreviation for cupramonium--a process for making a high quality rayon. In the US, we generally call it bemberg. Claire

Thanks ladies!

Nicole, mine is a made in France, but I thought Italian too. I love the feel of the material and I imagine your gowns must hang beautifully. Look forward to your book launch!

Great link Viviene - quite the properties!

Bemberg is a first for me too, Claire - it's the best quality rayon I have ever come across.

According to the Fairchild's, the cellulose is derived from wood pulp or cotton linters. Apparently both are sources for the cellulose for rayon.

I see also that cuprate silk was a term formerly applied to cuprammonium rayon.
