Art Deco Dress?

I agree it is an Kurti. The fabrics are often delicate and the closures sound just right. I would also agree that if it is "vintage" it is no older than the 1980's

Thank you, Ruth, for checking on the term Art Deco. I wrote, around 1970. Bevis Hillier's first book, which I just looked at, in my library, was published in 1968. He defines the term in this book. He selected and wrote the catalog notes for the exhibit in Minnesota.

While we know that not everything on Wikipedia is correct, I believe this entry on Bevis Hillier is:

In 1968 his book Art Deco of the 20s and 30s was published by Studio Vista. This was the first major work on a hitherto neglected period of art, which had been previously been referred to by various names. His use of the term Art Deco became definitive

The dress we are discussing has some Art Deco elements, and was probably made in India in the 1980's or 1990's.

Marion, I saw the exhibit in SF in June, 2004 and was blown away! Ruth, you can still get the bok/catalog on Amazon, but it's pricey:

http://www.amazon.com/1910-1939-Ghi...=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334075306&sr=1-5.

There are several used copies available and you can probably buy it at the V&A.
