Boots
Boots have come a long way from being practical footwear for riding, the military or to protect against inclement weather to being fashionable. They got their first turn in the fashion spotlight in the 17th century, when light-coloured boots worn with elaborate lace-trimmed boot hose were all the rage for men. In the early 19th century, highly polished top boots, Wellington boots or Hessians were footwear choices that no fashionable man could be seen without. Boots for women had mostly not been in existence until then in Western fashion, but first low-heeled ankle boots and later higher heeled lace-up boots became mainstays in women's wardrobes in the 19th century. Though they were often beautifully decorated, they were not meant to be seen under long skirts. Rising hemlines in the 20th century finally brought women's boots into full view. The 1920s saw a trend for "Russian boots", and in the 1960s they took off in combination with mini skirts. This week, VFG members put their best foot forward with boots for all occasions!
