Camp!

Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes On Camp,” describes the always conspicuous Camp design-style as embracing, "love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” This important essay is the inspiration for the Met’s new exhibit, “Camp: Notes On Fashion,” the purpose of which is described in their exhibit overview as an examination of, “how the elements of irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality and exaggeration are expressed in fashion.”

An opportunity to be unconventional, to think outside-the-box, is rare and welcome to designers of any stripe, and the freedom inherent in the Camp style allows tremendous opportunity for expression and innovation in a virtual carte-blanche to the imagination. From its cultish Rocky Horror Picture Show days to the cultural mainstream and The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, Camp has proven its staying power and achieved a lasting significance in the world of fashion design. Let’s have some fun and open eyes this week as the Vintage Fashion Guild's members push boundaries and walk the fine and often blurry line between fashion and costume. No gimp bracelets or cowboy blankets here!
