collectables of the future?

I've been readin this thread with interest and I must say that it's just best to buy what you like and not worry about if it will be collectible in the future.
I started collecting antique corsets, bustles and hoops before they became stupidly priced and everyone wanted them. When I go to antique sales and live auctions and there is one, I'm competing against vintage dealers and vintage collectors that wouldn't have normally bought an antique corset but now want one because they are the thing to have. I'm hoping that the craze for them will pass over in a few years and then I can go back to collecting them in peace!!

Oh, don't you wish, Lei?

I have to say the same thing about vintage handbags. people fight over some pretty pedestrian items in really bad condition at live auctions. especially beaded bags in poor condition that everyone is assuming that they can wash and repair easily and they go for astronomical prices.

I think Jenn was also thinking along the lines of what will we kick ourselves for not keeping in the future. (wouldn't i like to have a crystal ball?)

Chris

Yes, as Chris put it, I'm more thinking of those everyday items in comparison to the day dress of the 50s.

I find a nest of day dresses and bring them home giddy as a schoolgirl. Grandma (lives with me) looks at me and think's I've been into her meds drawer! "Heck, I wouldn't wear one of those again if you paid me" or "what do you want with that old thing for?"

I'm already wishing I still had my old prom dress, my hot pink sweater, my PINK satin western shirt with the white fringe (I was a dork) and maybe a few pairs of my tight leg jeans. Oh, and the canvas sneakers and ballet flats that are probably the reason I have to see a chiropracter every 2 weeks.

I'm talking good run of the mill every day folks stuff. I won't be finding couture around here...unless Alfred Dunner, R&K Knits and Leslie Fay count. Ha! I'd be rich.

Buying what I love is a no lose situation because even if its not worth a diddly penny, at least I will have a house full of things i love. It's just not predictable is it? I remember in the 80s everyone was mad for the Emanuels, or Pam Hogg or Jasper Conran. I mean you may like that stuff, and I do, but it's hardly worth a fortune is it?I had an emanuel corset to get married in and it cost me £20 from a really expensive vintage dealer in the west end. Nobody wanted it! (It still had the price tag for £1,000.)

I betcha no one will want Mathew Williamson in 30 years....?

College? No, try HS! Class of '91! I was ankle warmer deep into Duran Duran, Culture Club, MTV and big hair. Oh, the angora fuzzy leg warmers....wonder if the fetish folk would buy those today!?

In college I went angsty industrial and wore those awful military jump boots and flannel shirts. I doubt that look will come back, as all the jeans were falling apart already.
Don't make me get out pictures.

I HAVE my prom dress - class of 92 here - in all of its assymetrical ankle length in the back, just below the knee in the front, sequins bodiced glory. Really missing that i can't find (somewhere at my parents house i swear mom musta got rid of it) the turquoise ruched bodice homecoming dress with the poufy knee length skirt.

In late high school i was wearing more 40s inspired stuff, but when i got to college......I still have my knock off Doc Martens and as well as a pair of jeans from that time, and I had Marcia Brady hair. I miss most of my 90s doing 70s doing 40s platform shoes, though.

I agree that the angsty industrial worker look won't be coming back soon...or if so, it was a more "do it yourself" look and it was all how it was worn versus what it was. I had seen some kids in ripped jeans with flannel shirts tied around their waists recently but i think it was more utilitarian versus intentional. Personally, the jeans that are out now that has a wash that looks like you just fell off a horse...doesn't fly with me because its almost like jeans have to earn that. it can't be faked.

well..leg warmers i noticed have not come back. But wookie boots have.

Oh you guys are too funny......

Class of 95. You guys made me go and dig out old yearbooks and mags to remind me of the fashion trends at the time!!!!! I had me a really good laugh.....The fan hair do was in, and I I was right along with eveyone else!!!!!!
