Colonial Williamsburg Conference "Millinery Through Time"

Bonnie you look fab! if they do anything else regarding fashion please let me know.I would love to attend. My cousin leaves near there and I can always squeeze in a visit.
Tish
Oh, Tish....that would be wonderful to meet you. If you visit your cousin, just let me know and we will make a time for lunch and a chat!

How exciting to read about this conference! And Bonnie you look smashing! My gawd that's a honkin' sized Joseff brooch, lol, and I bet you must have received lots of compliments over it. And wonderful hat! I've only ever had the chance to touch (caress?) Hawes clothing at Karen's auctions, but that was the extent of it and was unaware that she was a milliner too.

Do you know if they'll be repeating this event next year? I hope so -- and hope that the success of this year's event will encourage them to do so. If they do, I think we'll need to plan a road trip.

P.S. I look forward to hearing what the granddaughter of Ms. Castle has to say about the compact -- so please let us know. :)
I'm not sure if the Margaret Hunter will sponsor any more conferences since this was to celebrate their 60th Birthday, but Colonial Williamsburg is always holding conferences on various subjects and you can check out their events on their website. This weekend Jamestown will be having a recreation of the wedding of Pocahontas to John Rolfe in honor of her 400th anniversary and I am hoping to go. There was a wonderful article in our local newspaper about the many ladies who came to Jamestown to embroider the beautiful garment she will be wearing for the celebration. It is so beautiful.....white with black embroidery featuring the things that would have been most dear to Pocahontas such as the Turtle(the symbol of the Chickahominy Indian tribe of which she was a member). Here is a website to check out the festivities: http://www.historicjamestowne.org/wofp/events.php
We are very fortunate to live in Virginia and near these historic American sites. And, I will get busy and photo the compact for Tina Joseff and I have a cross I want to ask her about, also! I will let you know when I hear from her. And, Laura, a roadtrip is possible....it can happen!

Thank you for the information and link Bonnie. My goodness, how wonderful it must be to view this gown and attend the 'wedding'! I"m going to check the link in a few moments and read all about it.

And, Laura, a roadtrip is possible....it can happen!

I travel through Virginia on occasion and so it's definitely do-able. Thanks again Bonnie and good luck with the compact and cross -- hope you hear back from Ms. Joseff soon!

.....Queen For A Day contestants.....remember that show, or I am just the oldest on the planet that does?

I got up out of my rocking chair and shook my brain...and yes I DO remember that show when it was on the air. I was very very little of course but I recall watching it while still in diapers!

:hysterical:

Bonnie,

Your comments about Mela's class were realistic. 15 people in a short time class is too many! I have actually taken a few classes of Mela's at Costume College in LA (where I also teach as well), and they allow only a very small number in her limited attendance classes. Some of her classes are several hours long, a few I believe took up the entire day with breaks in between. I wonder if the programmers had to struggle to get all the classes squeezed in that short weekend? When she is not rushed or under such pressure, she is very attentive to each and every student. And yes, isn't her hair amazing? She has so much of it and that gorgeous color!

I love Virginia, went there in my youth. It is a beautiful place.

Sounds like it was a fantastic conference, Bonnie, and YOU LOOK AMAZING!

Like Laura, the only Hawes things I've encountered have been at Karen Augusta's auctions (I did read a couple of books by her; she was an amazing intellect), and am SO impressed by your wonderful hat. I'd love to learn the backstory of how it became part of your collection, if you're inclined to divulge that info!)

And the Joseff brooch is beyond stunning... (as I'm sure the earrings are, though I can't see them in your pic).

Thanks for sharing!

I don't mind divulging at all, Carrie! This hat was among a large lot of hats from the 30s and

40s that I purchased years ago from a local estate. Some ladies were cleaning out their Mother's

hats and didn't want them, so I gladly took them off their hands! I kept a good number of them

as they just "spoke to me".....there were several of those little small wool felt hats that look like scull caps

with those silly little appendages on them! They were just so darn cute, I couldn't resist them. I sold some

and kept some! I fell in love with this Dawes hat and have never found another one since,

although I have looked for another. The Joseff brooch was acquired (March 2002) from a

fellow jewelry club member who used to set up at the old show they called the Atlantique City

Antique Show that was held twice a year in Atlantic City, NJ. Gail Crockett (Aunt Tink) had a

number of Joseff pieces at the time and I just had to have this one. I later attended one of the

conventions that Vintage Fashion and Costume Jewelry(VFCJ---now CJCI) would hold every other year in Rhode

Island and found the matching earrings and was always glad that I didn't pass them by.
