Could these be a set?

Earlier this week, I found this pair of black silk satin lounging pants, which after research I guess are c. 40s. Yesterday I went back to the same shop and found what I at first assumed was the jacket to go with them, but after getting it home, I'm less sure and would welcome more expert opinions.

The pants are silk, while the jacket is rayon.

The pants have a strip of red and gold embroidered fabric on the inner cuffs, so I assumed any matching top or jacket would be the same red and gold?

The jacket construction seems right for 40s, and it has shoulder pads, but the lining is synthetic, which seems...maybe not right for 40s?

If these are a set, would there have been a third piece, a blouse or top? I'm kind of thinking so as the jacket doesn't fasten all the way down, but the pants are very high waisted, so....not sure.

Any opinions or insight welcome!

Hi plousia, no, I do not think they are a set but they could be worn together.

Why don't I think they're a set? Firstly, because they're different fabrics and secondly, because they're different eras. Whilst I can't tell how old the trousers are, the top displays construction from a much more modern era. Again, I can't be sure of when but I'm thinking '70s or more recently judging by the serging, top-stitching and hem width. From your photos they also don't seem to be as good quality as the trousers.

Hi Nicole, thanks so much for your opinion. It's hard to get a clear photo of the jacket construction, but there is no serging or top stitching. The edges actually all appear to be hand stitched. I'm not sure about the seams. The lining seams look probably machine-stitched.

It does make sense that the jacket could be more modern, though. The synthetic lining makes me most suspicious.

Rightio: so the last photo is not of the hem of the jacket but of the trousers? In that case, I think they're unlikely to be '40s. I just zoomed in and can see now that they're zig-zagged: that suggests they're home sewn.

Sorry, I should have labelled better. The last photo is the jacket. The hem with the red and gold fabric are the trousers.

Also I know it looks like zigzagging but I think it is handstitching; I can try to take a better photo if that would help. It's not sewn through, it's just tacking down the edge.

Here's a better macro shot of the jacket stitching. Pardon any stray cat hairs which may have made their way into the shot...

Any follow-up on this? I'd like to post it today but now I'm not sure what decade to list it as.

Thanks! I'm convinced they're not a set, so will list them separately. I was more concerned by the thought that the jacket might be later than 40s. The lining is synthetic, but the exterior is rayon satin. Is there anything that rules it out as 40s? I think the main evidence against was the appearance of zigzag stitching, but it does seem it is hand-stitched.

This is by no means definitive, but the top gives off a late 50s to 60s vibe to me - I think it’s the boxiness. Also, I don’t think there was much coming out of Asia during the WW2 years.

You mentioned shoulder pads - firmish like felt inside? Or spongier like foam rubber?

Hmm, if I had to choose I would say they are a bit more firmish. They are pretty minimal. They feel like a thickish layer of some type of fabric. They are under the lining so I can't see what they are made of.

Also, I get what you're saying about the boxiness, but the length doesn't seem right for 50s or 60s - it falls to below the hips.

There are a lot of Asian pajamas/loungewear listed online as 40s, maybe post-war? Many of the jackets have this boxy shape.
