Dating/Description Help On 3-pc Wool \"Jean Blackburn\" Outfit

this 3-pc suit is a gorgeous orange wool knit. It looks to me like 1950's/1960's.

any help in dating/description would be appreciated, as always.

thanks,
Connie

the top is sleeveless with a zipper in the back. skirt has left side seam zipper and button. and then the gorgeous jacket

Cute suit! I have a very similar one from George Carmel in yellow knit with mother of pearl buttons - also three pieces, done with the same style. Mine has the union label from 1963-1974. When I was searching around for descriptors for my set, I came across words like "boxy" to describe the coat, "Jackie O", and the ever-present (but not always that applicable) "mod". "Mad Men" is also used a lot for keywords on 60s stuff, too. Also, I don't know how tightly your suit's skirt would fit on an actual body, but if it meets the requirements then "wiggle skirt" always seems like a hot keyword to throw in there.

Hope it helps!

I've seen that fabric weave before, usually a late 60s item, and yours fits right in...I'd go 67-73 for an age
Such lovely buttons!

Nice color! And I agree with late 60s to early 70s. As Mary mentioned, those rounded patch pockets were popular at that time. And given the fabric as well, I doubt this is any earlier than late 60s.

I agree with late 60's and LOVE that color! I would avoid using the term Mad Men in your listing if you are posting on eBay as it is considered Keyword Spamming and your listing can be canceled for it. Also Mad Men takes place in the early 60's coming up on mid and this does not relate to that era. Also, I wouldn't consider the term "wiggle" for this. There are many hourglass dresses with tapered slim skirt that can be considered "wiggle Dresses", however for skirts the term that is more relative for slim straight or tapered skirts is "pencil skirt". From the look of the back of this skirt it looks like it may be a-line though; it's hard to tell from the photos. Nice set!

Yikes! Amber, I didn't realize that Mad Men was a no-go on eBay - I'm sorry to have recommended it, I certainly wasn't trying to get anyone into trouble! And you're right that "pencil" is a more accurate term for a slim skirt. Wiggle popped in my head but it's definitely more for dresses.

Yeah, you have to be careful with your key words on eBay. Since Mad Men is a TV show the only way you could legally use it on eBay with vintage clothing would be if the clothing you are selling was actually used on the show or associated with the show in some way. Jackie-O might also be seen as Keyword Spamming by eBay as you would be using a celebrity name that is not directly correlated to your item. Easy to overlook if you are up on your eBay user policy:rudolph:

However "boxy" is a great way to describe the jacket and MOd works too.

Pencil skirt is such a better term if you are listing a skirt as it is a more searchable term AND I am tired of seeing anything from the 50s and 60s saying "wiggle" on it just to get hits even if its not (not that this is what you were suggesting, just putting in my 2 cents). Lately I have been seeing a lot of A-line dresses and skirts with the word "wiggle" attached to it and it has been driving me CRAZY:restlessvillagers:

Yes another late 60s... but I wanted to add... are you sure that it is wool? I am thinking a mix of poly if not all polyester from the pictures?

Quick easy test...if you have extra material to snip somewhere...even a TINY piece... put it in a dish and pour a harsh soda on it like plain coke or Pepsi... what dissolves is wool, whats left is not (most likely poly) if nothing dissolves then its not wool lol....

It very well could be, I am not saying that it is not wool,,,, I am just starting to get the hang of fabrics myself and I need to feel them and I still hem and haw (however you say it). Just a little neat trick and if you sell you do not want someone to get the wrong material as poly substantiates a later date while wool may turn other buyers on or off depending on their preferences....

Hope I haven't said too much....?

yep randomly came aross it on www.rebeccablood.net/domestic/fiber_content_tests.html

now one has to wonder... I now know where those little "odd" spots came from in my wool stuff... me being a clutz and spilling soda on myself lol!!! But it does work... but sometimes not 100% some wools seem to be more durable and make me think they are belnds when the tags clearly say they are not... but its a good starting point!
