Ever see such a wool blanket?! Lap Robe?

Probably tres ordinaire to you fashion conscience ones. Found this in the trash of Back Bay Boston a decade ago and forgot about it. Anyone know of its origin do tell thanks.
42 x 60 and 5/16 thick at edges...pills much thicker.

I think it's what my grandmother called an "afghan" which was a knitted or crocheted blanket like piece placed over the top of a sofa that could be used as a lap robe. Ot maybe - if it's not a lap robe it might be a scatter rug - but I think it's an afghan.
 
Thank you Linn. In the late 60's a long, embellished coat was called an 'afghan' as well- presumably referencing cultural folk wear.
