Fashion in Movies

Oscars are just around the corner!

I know we talk about fashions in movies from time to time and it was just mentioned
on a thread this week so I thought it would be fun:scratchchin: to put together a Fashion Movie List.

Please keep adding and I'll keep updating.

They don't have to be old movies.
There are plenty of great costumes all sorts of films, both new and old.

Alot will be classics and old stand-bys but it would be great to hear
about some obsure flicks we might not be familiar with.
Or at least they'll be new to some of us.

I'm just listing movies with release dates.
I'll go back at some point and add the fashion era of the movie.

Bonnie, Gatsby, The Boyfriend and Millie all reprised 20s and 30s styles.

Blowup features Veruschka.

Smashing Time...takes place on Carnaby St.

Rainbow Bridge, Jimi Hendrix in full flower, WORST movie EVER.

Quadraphenia...Mods, Rockers and The Who

Whoopee....Zeigfeld brought to the screen. Busby Berkley's STETSON HAT number.

Ziegfeld Girl - Judy Garland, Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner - 1941

My Fair Lady - Audrey - 1964

Vertigo - Kim Novak - 1958

Ziegfeld Girl is a pretty average film with great costumes, particularly Judy Garland's astonishing headgear during her Minnie From Trinidad Busby Berkeley number. If you haven't seen it, it's a treat and it's on youtube (I really must read the thread on how to post links!).

Minnie from Trinidad....the hat has to be an insider joke, like Berkley's famous 'rolling crotch shots'.

Sarah-Jane, just copy the whole youtube 'imbed' line, and paste it here.

STETSON HAT....it goes on and on, and every moment is fabulous....

I asked a similar question in the trade forums some time ago Karen, and you might be able to haul some of these over to the public side.

I have been enamored mainly with 30s films...Hollywood at its best!

Flying Down to Rio ...first appearance by the scene-stealing duo of Astaire and Rogers, the beautiful Dolores del Rio, and the most crazy air Busby Berkley sequence.

I'm sort of nuts for Fred and Ginger, and my favorites of the 30s films have gorgeous costumes: Top Hat, Swing Time, Shall We Dance.

The Cook Thief, His Wife And Her Lover 1989. Gaultier designs.

The Gang's All Here 1943. Carmen Miranda in her finest.

Maryalice, Stetson Hat made me smile for a whole 4 mins 55 seconds! Made me wish I'd taken tap classes when my joints were still up to it. Thanks for sharing it.

I don't think anyone has mentioned these ones:

The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) - a murder mystery where a fashion photographer played by Faye Dunaway has clairvoyant flashes of the murder scene but the fashion shoot scenes are divine! Pure 70's hedonism

Lovely to Look At (1952) - cheesy film about a couple of 'guys' who inherit a fashion house in Paris and fall in love with the vendeuse and models. Its hard to sit through the film without your teeth hurting but the finale of the fashion show, with all the clothes done by Adrian, is a treat.

Roberta (1935) is the original version of Lovely to Look at, and the film is much better, but the fashion show at the end isn't as luxurious, and its in black and white, however, its still worth seeing.

And of course -- Ready to Wear (1994)

I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's yesterday (again)
*I adore Audrey Hepburn
*George Peppard was HOT
*Do not watch if you are trying to quit smoking
