Finally got to dress up my 50s suit

I've shown this suit before, but last Saturday I finally got to wear it the right way and dress it up as it deserves ;) .

I have worn it once before, on the evening of the day I bought it, in Montreal. We went to the theater that night and I literally had to rush to buy a pair of tights because I hadn't packed any skirts or dresses for that trip, and I only had ballerina flats to wear with it...

Last Saturday we had a belated birthday dinner for my uncle, and considering the weather, this was just the right thing to wear! I wore it with the right kind of high heels (with a discreet platform sole) and the right vintage handbag (which is actually a very dark blue - but the light at the restaurant was very bad - it's a place in the country, in an old wooden house).

Though the skirt isn't quite what I'd call a wiggle skirt, it's not far from it! it's pretty straight, but tight to just below the hips, and in the end it still doesn't allow for big steps - and in combination with the high heels, it was an unusual feeling - at least for a "modern" girl like me :spin: . But I have to say, in combination with the feeling of having a handbag hanging from the crook of my arm, it just felt so "ladylike" - I actually liked that a lot!

Karin-

You look fabulous! I love the suit. It's exactly the type of clothing I am drawn to.

I have a few pieces in my wardrobe that do not allow for "full" movement and it is definitely an adjustment. I have a skirt I acquired recently that is mid-calf that doesn't allow for any range of movement and I'm not sure how much I will wear it!

You look very chic --- it 'suits' you! However, I think a straight skirt is a wiggle skirt - 1950s models used to stand one foot in front of the other to make the skirt look narrower at the hem and stylists would clothespeg in the extra for photo shoots, but as you walk the skirt will pull creating a narrow hem line look. I laugh at modern designers who re-invent the wiggle skirt by tapering the skirt to the point that models can't even walk down the aisle!

Thanks you all! I really love this suit - it has a lot of really nice little details - it's actually the attention to details that gets me every time.

Good comment Jonathan! The skirt has a tiny slit at both sides, but they are more for decorative reasons - they don't really make the skirt a lot wider.

And I do like the idea of a bit of restriction of movement - when it's such a well-fitting piece (and they can do wonders to one's figure!).

My mom has invited me to the theater the week after next... I might just wear this again - show this city some style :D .

For me you have sumed up what wearing vintage fashions should be all about today. Not just looking nice but also feeling nice when wearing them.

Well, thanks for all your nice comments! Yes, I tried to keep it all "in style" as good as I could.

I just wore it again last weekend, to the theater. But since it's gotten quite cold lately, I had to dress it up in a more modern way - with a tight black turtleneck and high-heeled black suede boots and a black pashima-style shawl, but I still think it looked great (no photo, sorry). This suit is quite versatile! It still worked with the boots because they're quite elegant, and the shaft is just the right height - it doesn't reach the seam of the skirt (nobody does really warm and really elegant winter boots quite like Pertti Palmroth!).

And the feeling nice when wearing vintage fashion - that certainly is an important thing to me! The thing is - these clothes are usually so well cut, and if they fit well, they can do all sorts of wonderful things to one's figure - and that's what makes me feel great too! Vintage fashion is good for one's self-esteem, no question! This suit's skirt doesn't only make me wiggle, it also makes me look good - and the jacket too - it accentuates the right parts like most new things don't. I usually felt "dressed" up when wearing a suit (which I usually don't) or when I tried one on every now and then, but I don't feel that way when I wear this suit.
