For Senti : The long awaited Sambo Fashions dress - the fabric is like a heavy-weight faille, with the "cording" effect running horizontally, and is quite shiney in appearance. The dress opens the full length at the back, fastening with the 8 large buttons. I originally thought 60s for this, but in view of the length (39") I'm wondering if it is more 70s?<p>

That is VERY cute Margaret. It has some very classic elements to it that I can see why you would be in a conundrum over exact date. Senti would know for sure as she knows the nuances of the line. My first gut reaction was 60s, but with the classic elements, really, it is a toss up
 
ooohhhhhhhh, what a *lovely* dress! :) :)

Deffinately sixties. Geometric cut, fab bold detailing at the back, classic stylish design, high neck and low back, lovely smart bold colour. I'd say a very stylish mid-60s (1965 if I have to really pin it down) dress. And the length is perfect too. I know the 60s was the era of the mini-skirt but the more demure lady in polite society needed a more classicaly stylish look that can't be achieved if you're showing several inches of thigh... so knee-length is a very popular length for smarter outfits in the 60s.

My head is spinning! I went to the VC Mall to check out the dress and sizing, and find I've been board sniped!

Ladies, I'll be adding this label to the resource. Should I say that this label is likely, possibly, ?? Samuel Sherman?

Sorry guys, couldn't help myself... you know how into these things I am. Tried to resist but just couldn't. I resisted for all of two minutes and then had to go look, check sizing and then have it!

So would this metallic Young Edwardian I have be of the same era? Would it be appropriate to call it mod? Most of the YEs I've found and worn have been very hippie/prairie looking, so I thought this was rather unusual.

Lizzie - I'd say that the dress could very well be a Samuel Sherman... but will confirm or deny that it's on his style and cut when the dress arrives. :)

Leigh - I'd deffinately say that's a 60s dress, but I'd have possibly dated it a little later. Sort of 1967/1968. It's American mod but not British mod. I could really see one of the groovy girls on The Monkees TV show wearing that to a party. :)

Having said all that, the thin stripes and the neckline remind me very much of a 1964 Dollyrockers dress that Pattie Boyd modelled:

Deffinately 60s either way though. I don't think it's frilly enough to be 1964 though, so I'd have gone with the later date.

Which ALSO reminds me that I found a rather faboo Beatles wives photo I don't know if you already have for your website....it was in a book I've had for YEARS but had forgotten about!

I'd almost kill for a pair of boots like that, I love those boots, everyone wore those boots in the sixties. I have dreams of finding boots like that in shops.. and then I wake up and got very upset about not having them. Even my solicitor went on about chasing a girl down Carnaby Street and following her round London trying to pluck up the courage to ask her where she'd bought those boots so he could get some for his girlfriend. ARGH! :(

On to better things... the exceedingly fabulous Beatles wives (and sister in law) picture of them modelling Apple fashions by The Fool. What book is it in? I love that picture to distraction, Maureen looks like some sort of Botticelli-styled angel in it. I'd love to be able to find a huge clear version of it. Thank-you so much for sending it to me. I adore the beatle girls, and anything with Mo on it is deeply fabulous. :)

I tried to get a print of it from the National Portrait Gallery (as it's listed amongst their stock) but they don't own the copyright so they can't do prints. :( Wish there was a colour version. I'd love to see the vivid colours as they sound so thrillingly wild:

I kep wondering why everyone totally trashed the designs by The Fool. I know they're a bit far out for most people, but I'm really into the few things I've seen. Everyone trashes the designs they did for Apple (which include these outfits). Admittedly they were very daft with the multi-coloured silk labels in every piece which in effect often cost more for the lebal then the item itself... but hey, it's the Beatles, it's London in the late 60s, it's Apple, it's wild excess, that's what it's all about!

I'm so sorry about that!! Now I know you want them - I will keep an eye out!!! (always useful to know these things!!)

The faboo pic was from a book called Glamour in Fashion by David Bond. I've had it since my early teens, it's not exactly exhaustive so I generally don't use it much. Which in TURN reminds me I have an issue of Vogue which, I think, has Pattie modelling a variety of gear (Ossie, Bates etc) with a page of clothes by The Fool. There are two other models I don't recognise. Do you want me to hunt it down and scan it in for you? She also pops up in a late 60s issue wearing Ossie gear with Botticelli images superimposed on her. Just let me know and I'd be happy to scan any you don't have!

I've been searching for those boots for so long now I'd given up and forgotten to keep searching ebay. ooops. Got overwhelmed by the vast amount of 60s style boots appearing all over the place lately (can't complain though!)

I would love to see those Pattie pics you mentioned. I know the Ossie pics you mentioned, I do have those and remember them as they are so distinctive (UK Vogue, June 1969) ... which reminds me, I have some *major* Pattie website updating to do! Lots of fashion spreads to get up on there.

The only photos I have of her modelling clothes by The Fool are here , and I think I have one other one of her and her sister somewhere, but I'm not even sure if that's by The Fool or not.. can't think of anyone else who'd team thick green stockings with any outfit besides them though. LOL!

I have a very good supplier of Pattie fashion images who keeps me forever behind with my updating, (LOL!) - my friend Lynn. She runs a group on Yahoo especially to house and display her Pattie fashion pictures and it's phenomenal to look through if you're into 60s fashion.

Pattie Boyd's Sixties Style

She's added pictures of other models that were friends / peers / lookalikes of Pattie and also outfits from designers who frequently used Pattie such as Foale and Tuffin.

...and while I'm on a mad sixties fashion-photoshoot ramble - has anyone seen that book "Unseen Vogue"? I just bought it today and I'm positively fascinated with it. I spent over an hour sat with my mother and a mutual friend this afternoon ooohing and ahhing over the pictures in it. They're all deeply divine even if they are the snaps that were discarded.

Interesting you mention "discarded shots". With the caliber of photographers, discarded shots would be head and shoulders above things that appeared in other magazines.

Do you find that the discarded shots were more candid, or just were wonderful and maybe didn't quite fit in with the overall design layout the editor had in mind...whether it was merely the orientation of the photo of the color scheme...
 
There were all sorts of reasons for them being discarded. Some were ahead of their time and just weren't appreciated, there were some famous photo shoots (if you're into Vogue that is, LOL!) where you knew that the picture in the book was good, but the one that had appeared in the magazine was obviously better at the time. Some of them they were the full shots or un-alterred shots where you'd only seen part of the picture in the magazine. It's a truly amazing book.

My favourite picture out of it is a strange choice for me. I have a friend who is mad about 1940s/1950s Norman Parkinson pictures which I also find stunning but I always crinkle my nose up when she mentions him. Cherry Marshall (aka Miss Susan Small) sent Pattie Boyd to him when she'd just started modelling for her first actual paid assignment... and Pattie returned to the office in floods of tears, absoloutely broken hearted as he'd asked her if it was fashionable these days to look like a rabbit (referring to the gap in her teeth).

Anyway, the picture I most love in the book is a really far-out 60s multiple-exposure by him of a Susan Small outfit and Blackpool Illuminations! (makes a change from his shots of Paris and New York, LOL!) it's not in the style he's usually known for but it's truly amazing. It looks fabulously 1966, but he took it in 1960 and they decided it was unsuitable for publication as it was too startling.

The dress has arrived, it's deeply fabulous, the girls at work want me to wear it to work as they thought it was amazing (I picked it up in my lunch break).. and it *is* the correct cut, proportions, style and fabric to be a Samuel Sherman.

It was so perfectly packaged and I'm so happy woth it. You're an absoloute angel for sending the Biba blouse too. It is a modern one but I love it and it fits like a glove! Hurray for Barbara Hulanicki! :) I'm getting quite into her more up-to-date stuff now.

...and I never realised you were a Wirral girl! I am so impressed, I *love* it there. Many happy memories. :)

Yep! - Wirral by adoption - been here since 1969, with a 15 year break up in Scotland. It's a nice place - well, most of it!!! ;)
