This 50s coat is what I thought was astrakhan, but now think it is better described as Persian Lamb??? Ihave absolutely NO idea what kind of fur makes the collar - ANY help much appreciated.

The label reads only "Astra Furs, Paris, Made of the famous French fabric".

I have a book called "Buying and Caring for Your Fabulous Fur." In a discussion of the late 19th century:

"The use of astrakhan (known as Persian Lamb in the United States) increased greatly, introducing new segments of the population to fur."

Also, later in the book:

"Persian Lamb (caracul) repairability: Better than normal. Additional material easily added and areas can be removed without difficulty; only when fur starts to peel is it too old for remodeling."

So, apparently Persian Lamb is the same as Astrakhan is the same as Caracul.

The collar looks like the picture of muskrat in my book.
 
Margaret, I'm probably as fur challenged as you, but
would the collar be sable?

Thanks Sue = no real idea about the collar, with so many suggestions being put forward..............I think it will be my usual "it's got a fur collar" listing. :)
 
The collar does look like Sable, but it could be muskrat dyed to look like sable... it's hard to tell whether it's sable in need of a good cleaning or not. But Sable is usually soft & silky, whereas muskrat has a more bristle like texture. My guess is that Sue is right, since it appears to be a higher end coat.

Thanks Elin - the collar is indeed 'bristly' rather than silkily smooth, so I guess it is dyed muskrat after all!
