Capturing the spirit of an era is always difficult for any costume designer of a period drama. But for the series The Crown, Michele Clapton and Jane Petrie were willing to take on the challenge. Endless hours were spent studying historical photographs and vintage Vogue issues for inspiration. Clapton also used original 1950s dress patterns, and studied designers of the era including Hardy Amies for men’s suiting, Dior, and royal dressmaker Norman Hartnell. All this helped to create a perfectly curated mid-century wardrobe of both custom-made replicas, and true vintage pieces from the 40s and 50s.
