Get the Look: Tippi Hedren, a Classic Hitchcock Heroine
Cool, calm and collected. Alfred Hitchcock had a type. His leading lady's restrained exterior tended to mask depths of passion and vulnerability, not to mention secrets that put her and her male co-star in peril. Hitchcock also understood the power of clothes, and masterfully used his character's wardrobe to convey shifting identities, gender dynamics and social status. His decades-long partnership with costume designer Edith Head produced some of filmdom's most iconic and memorable costumes.
This week at the VFG, we're tippi-ing our hat to one of Hitchcock's most well-known heroines, actress and animal rights activist, Tippi Hedren, who celebrates her 91st birthday January 19th. Ms. Hedren starred in two of his later films: The Birds (1963), for which she won a Golden Globe, and Marnie (1964). Think clean lines and solid colors, tailored suits with prim blouses, shirtwaist dresses, soft knit tops and pencil skirts, structured handbags, scarves, gloves, classic pumps, handsome wool coats, elegant evening gowns and furs.
