Ginala Coat - Woven?

Okay - here it is again. What a mess I am today!!

I am really curious as to how you might describe the construction/material - just woven? It is quite heavy.

That's a really cool coat! It's like a boucle' tweed on steroids! Like a Berber carpet. I think I would call it an "oversized" boucle' tweed weave....

Maybe there's a more technical term for it, but that is "how" it looks to me. I think it's both a great style and a great fabric!

I agree...from far away it looks like a boucle', but close up it gets to look more like a rag tweed. So...Boucle' Tweed sounds good to me!

I agree with '60s, maybe 1966? and it has an almost Chanel inspiration to it.

Anne - so funny you said carpet. I had a buyer over last night who was gaga for this coat. It was too big for her but she kept trying to rearrange it and belt it tighter to fit her. Anyway...she said same thing - it remind her of a carpet.

Thanks to all of you for date help and also some inspiration for description and material. I really appreciate.

It grabbed it because I though it was kind of unique but after looking at it on manni, it is really growing on me.
 
LOL! If this fits you and you'd wear it, keep it! It is so unique! I used to sort of specialize in coats, and hundreds have passed through my doors (and, unfortunately, too many of them have come to rest in my inventory still), and I've never seen a coat quite like this! I agree with Barbara that it has a mid 60s sort of Chanel look.
 
Sadly, it doesn't quite fit right...a little too small across the girls :)

I do love it and would wear in a heartbeat if it fit. Hopefully, it will find the perfect home :)

That is probably because Ginala was the junior/petite division of Originala Inc.

Their Ginala line was introduced in 1966 and ran through approximately 1976. The early designs were by Gunter Ruecker, with some designs from Jean Marie Armand.

Their early coat shape was described as a "pup-tent shape" or a "shortened tent." I like the belt on the coat, as you show it, but none of their ads show a belt on it. This is a 1967 sketch for a similar design...
 
It has belt loops so I am thinking at some point there was a belt of some sort. I am just not sure if this is original or not - although I like it, I have some doubts.

Originala - wasn't that fairly high end or am I thinking of wrong company?

Agree...I can say that when the girl put it on last night, it took on a very "odd" look when she pulled the belt tight. To my eye, something looked off and it ruined the line of the coat.

Based upon your info - I am wondering if it was more of a loose wrap as opposed to a belt. The wooden buckle on this feels like it doesn't really go with the buttons...

They wouldn't put the loops and then not sell with a belt right? Orrrrr, if this belt isn't original, I wonder if someone just added the loop strings based upon their own preference?

Hmmmm. some things to ponder for sure.
 
I doubt as well that's its original belt. If it did have a belt, it would likely have been a self-fabric belt that may or may not have had a buckle fastening; it could have just tied, depending on its width.
 
It would have to be some other form of this pattern. Self fabric would be so thick it wouldn't stay tied. Lol

I do think some sort of wrap for sure...you guys are right.
 
Hi,

How wide and thick are the belt loops? If they are narrow, possibly it had a fairly thin belt made of matching leather and gold trim which I think I see on the buttons (?) , versus a wide thick one.

Also, are the belt loops placed at the natural waist or are they sitting above the waistline?

Just curious. I love that coat/
