I'll take a closer look at the chain links when I get home from work tonight. If they're just pressed closed, then I think I can easily open them and remove the section. If they've been soldered then I'll take it to a jeweler.
 
Another reason to think 1920s is that this is defintely an adult woman's jewelry and your grandmother would have been in her 20s at that time. Any younger, and she would not have been likely to wear such a set. It does look Czech or European in style rather than US. But if she lived in NY, she could certainly have purchased there as well.
