Hawaiian Shirt Decade ID Help!

A Chindian Boutique

After sifting through forums and threads, I've learned that ID-ing vintage Hawaiian shirts is a little complex, except for 2 tell tale signs- the shape of the collar and how the tag is sewn.

I'm assuming that some, if not all of these, are from the 70's based on those 2 identifying factors, and the patterns. But is there another way to tell for sure?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I've never heard of those as "tell tale" ways to date aloha shirts, so, i'm just wondering where you found that suggestion?

I honestly don't see any of your shirts as being from the 70s, they all seem (much) younger to me, especially the first two.

my (ex) FIL (born, raised and lived his life on Oahu) wore aloha shirts every day, so I am familiar with them.

they can be difficult to date as some components don't change much over time, and a lot of old time cuts and prints were brought back especially after the success of Tom Selleck in Magnum, PI in the 80s. Then, with the continued success of shows such as the remake of Hawaii 5-0, aloha shirts do continue to retain their popularity, without many significant changes to prints, and cuts and construction.

I was in the middle of writing the message below when Mary posted the above. I agree.

I live in Hawaii. I am not an expert on Hawaiian shirts, but I see them frequently. I agree with Mary that your shirts don't appear to be older. If you have not already checked the VFG's Label Resource for the labels in your shirts - that might be a good place to start.

If you can get closer shots of the labels and the care information that may help dating your shirts - and all vintage clothing! In addition to the patterns and colors, older shirts might be made of rayon.

As you know, Hawaiian shirts are still being made and sold tod
ay.

I think a couple of them are likely 80s-90s and the others look modern. I would just like to say that I love the colour palette of seeing them all together, very pleasing to the eye!
