I don't have it on me right now, but if I remember correctly, it is a heavy wool crepe with a silk lining. I don't know what it is. It looks like a coat, but only zips about half way down the front. Over the zipper is the panel with the buttons. It must be a dress, but it seems unusual. I would also like to try and date it. Does anyone know anything about it? Thanks

So, you think it is a coat? Sure looks like it, but I don't see how it could be, as the front only opens partway.
 
I'd date the Beene to about 1967/68--somewhere around there. It "could" be a coat dress, but the fabric, at least in the pictures, looks too heavy for this to have been worn as a dress. But hard to tell without seeing it and handling it in person.

I agree with MJ on the second coat.
 
Thanks guys! So you think it is a coat? Have you ever seen a dress coat like this that you had to step into, or put on over your head?
