I don't think we are disagreeing, Barbara. I agree that it's function is more that of a "wrapper".
My comment about tea gowns is merely that there is a period of time, particularly in the early 1900s, where there is a lot of contradiction of the wrapper/tea gown terminology and what the exact purpose and style would have been. (I found my research file! Yay! I'm not as disorganized as I thought!) My research, to date, on this subject has centered mostly on the evolution of terminology and function.
