Help dating antique brooch

Hi!

I was hoping someone could help me narrow down the dating on this brooch. My guess is Victorian to Edwardian, but I would love to be more specific. Also, was it typical for things to be coated in gold? This looks like gold, but there are spots where it's worn down to a much darker metal (as opposed to tarnish from a cheaper material).

I'd say you're on the money Jenn, and a type of Victorian love knot brooch. It appears to be gold fill with some enameling, if I'm seeing it correctly. Very pretty.
