Help identifying and dating this fur coat

Hi there! I’d really appreciate any help with identifying and dating this coat I just bought.

Here’s what the seller sent me, from someone who was also looking at the coat listing: The correct colour description is Champagne. The pelts are fully dropped which is most desirable and highest in quality. My guess is vintage 1960’s. I’m the daughter of a woman who was a buyer for Holt Renfrew furs in the seventies and she trained me well. It is gorgeous. Best wishes.

The fur is on the shorter length. And it’s fairly light. There is an opening on the seams of one of the sleeves (image 8008) and you can see the animal leather and a mesh-like backing, which is sandwiched between the exterior fur and the interior lining.

Image 8012 shows the lining and the fur seam in one of the sleeves.

The coat has 3 hook-and-eye fasteners along the lapels.

Please let me know if more information is needed to identify this item. Thank you!

Hi there,

Pretty coat. The fur type is mink, the color looks like tourmaline, the coat looks like it dates to the late 70s, possibly early 80s, and the pelts are fully let out out which are pelts cut into strips, and crafted together to create an elongated seamless look from top to bottom. Fully let out mink is better than pieced. Photo number 8008 shows a separation in the skin. This could be due to the skin drying out. Repair can be done in an effort to prevent further damage however assessing the condition of the pelts throughout the rest of the coat is important being one separation exists.
There was a 1978 film called I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses where a similar styled coat was worn. It was full length, a different fur type, and color; however it was similar in way of both the collar and sleeves, and the shape.

Caryn, thank you so much for your reply! This is amazing. Would you have any recommendations as to what to look for when repairing this coat? Are there experts on this, or would a seamstress be able to do the job?

Both furriers and seamstresses who have knowledge of leather care, treatment, and repair can help. I would check on both options. It is important for you to ask if they have the experience and knowledge required to assess damage and repair leather and fur garments.
